Ockie, I call BS:
  1. Ockie, as much as I despise Eskom, they are also dealing with an entity that can't be stored (Let's forget about batteries as it is irrelevant). I go the shop, I buy R500's worth of electricity and it NEVER expires.
  2. How does the data iBurst sells differ from that sold by Vodacom? Their data is valid for 2 or 3 years, can't remember which for the moment.

Xzib1t thanks. Can you confirm you have the same model as me? Samsung Omnia WP7?

Yes I have Mango - and all updates - I've been checking regularly for updates, and Internet Sharing is still not there. Also - if you have the same phone, have you unlocked it? (That works, but tokens to unlock were sold out)

Well my phone is an HTC 7 Mozart, but a friend has an Omnia 7 and his phone has Internet sharing, which is strange that you don't have it.

Personally, I think it is an oversight by Vodacom - they would be losing data sales keeping this option locked - it's possibly not intentional, but rather forgotten about, as they only offered the Omnias for a very short time frame, and don't have that many subscribers using that model perhaps?

I have been following international threads this year on that model and have seen mobile operators all around the world offering the Internet Sharing update for capped subscribers. Have just been hoping Voda would, but I guess it will never happen.

We don't disable hotspot functions on any handsets. Why would we? As you said, we want you to use as much data as possible.

I understand Jannie. Yet a web search on this functionality comes back with the same results : This is locked until the unlock update is released on the ISPs request. I'm pretty sure that Vodacom could have this Samsung patch released if requested.

Which is why I think it is an oversight.

I'd be massively appreciative if you could find out more?

Give me more details please. Exact phone model and version, OS version, etc.

I can send it on, but I've got no info on this to sound semi-intelligent.
 
Thanks Jannie - I have asked roguemat to help formulate the correct request from voda (if indeed anything can be done)

I have a Samsung Omnia 7 Windows Mango 7.10 (8107).

As far as I can make out, I have seen news of some international ISP's allowing the update to be released. Hopefully roguemat can shed some light on the matter!

The truth of the matter is that our SP's are not real carriers. They do not matter in the greater scheme of things. In the US carriers are a slightly different concept to what we have here. Over here we just have different companies ripping us off in different ways (sorry Jannie, but you know it's true). Over there, phones are way more tied to their carriers, and manufacturers play-ball with those carriers because thats how they will get their phones to the public.

This might change slightly now with VC having a deal with Nokia/MS with the Lumias, and that would be great - but I doubt it. What makes it even less likely to happen is that VC is not officially supporting the Omnia 7, so why would they go to the mission of getting it though for just a few users?

Your best bet is to hack it on. That would involve first unlocking your phone and then following a guide such as this: http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2011...msung-omnia-7-and-samsung-focus-in-one-click/
Unfortunately, that may or may not void your warranty, and I have never done it so I can't help out. My only Samsung device is an at&t Focus Flash, which came with the tethering update.

Summary:
-Vodacom will not care enough
-Even if they do, Microsoft probably does not consider them as a real carrier/SP, because they are not.
-Hopefully I am wrong about the above 2, and Jannie helps out.
-If not, hacking it is your only way.

EDIT: reading the previous discussions I have no clue why some people have the update and other don't. It could be that certain phones are considered carrier-locked and unlocked - but I don't know how that would differ if you guys got them from the same place.

I got the Omnia from voda, so it should be supported?

I looked at the link you posted - I had seen that before, but requires an unlocked phone. I've been trying since January to unlock, but Chevron (Official Unlock tokens from MS), are not selling them any more.

Guess I'm stuck with a VodaLemon for two years?

Jannie - anything you can try from your side?
