I hate ITunes

I've still got a copy of VLC on my ipad from before they (not Apple) pulled it from the app store but tbh when it comes to AVIs I use Air Video to stream them directly to my iPad. If I'm going to be away from the network it will convert them to h264 video at the press of a button.

Agreed. Still the most efficient, effective and easiest way of doing it.

What I like about it most is that I can get away with smaller file sizes, just for viewing on the iPad, and keep my originals intact. 16gb of storage goes much further that way.

Plus, when we have company over, I can give the kids an iPad each and they have access to their entire video collection and it keeps them out of our hair. :)

Dolby, the problem is that it tends to be all negative... Is there really nothing you like about your iPad experience?

Hi Droid,

I love my iPad and its the first thing I grab in the morning when I awake. It's with 95% of the time and I'm on it for hours every single night if I don't go out. I like the instant access, browsing from anywhere, ebooks, checking my shares, Facebook and reading the news on News24.

But - I feel everything I like about the iPad are generic tablet features. They all do Facebook, shares and News24 - and truth is I could have any.

I work in IT and between us, we've got iPads, Androids and the Xoom. They can all do what the iPad can do - but the iPad can't do everything that they can do.

EDIT : I think I'm fair when using a product. As an anti-Apple person before, I love the idea of the small iMac and don't see issues regarding premiums or performance etc. I'd rather small unit quite highly - but the unit above it I'd tell you I feel it's too expensive. Likewise - I'll tell you the iPad is mediocre

Sounds like a great option..

As I've said to you before; raise your concerns about what you need the iPad to do + why you think it's necessary.

You are not unique in wanting the iPad to do a lot of things; and you need only look at bwana's recent posting to see that there are really great solutions to problems that you might not be aware of.

Half a dozen viable solutions have been posted... Pick one...

My massive gripe the built in 3G limitations on the device, as that renders it near useless when away from home. But perhaps I did miss the multiple solutions ... so perhaps someone direct me to anyone of the solutions?

- 3G 20MB limit
- Cannot receive an SMS to warn when going OOB

Newstand is buggy - I've used 2GB getting 2 magazines, due the constant restarting and 'content error'. I admit though - I'm only on 5.0.1 and perhaps there's newer software version that'll fix this?

Why not trade in one (or both) of your iPads and get a Xoom, which btw is an android tablet? Clearly they're so much better so I just don't quite get why you haven't already done so.

You have mentioned the 3G limit and newsstand issues before; so there's no value in further discussing known issues.

The SMS one is new, so let me try to add my 2 cents.
Apple most likely excluded this as they feel it would not be a major end user requirement to have phone functionality on a tablet device; of course you can argue the merits of this specifically in the case of SA's use of SMS for prepaid / data bundles. So although I can sympathize with your specific case, I don't believe this is a major requirement and hence it will most likely never be supported. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2631341?start=0&tstart=0

Surely these minor issues cannot be the only things that make you apparently envious of your android colleagues?

Tether the iPad to your cellphone when you feel the need to download in excess of 20mb's. Load a data bundle onto your cellphone in order to remain cost effective...

Re sms notifying of data usage, create a homescreen shortcut to Vodacom's online data usage counter and keep track of your data usage that way around.

I have an idea... sell both of your iPad's and buy a Transformer Prime + keyboard dock Video comparison

Besides iPad 3 is due next year Feb If rumors are anything to go by.

You have to admit this restriction is a bit daft and most likely a throwback to when the original carrier AT&T promoted the iPhone with uncapped internet. If Apple were to make it a carrier option rather than a blanket restriction, then that would make sense.

+1 -- Apple should have made this something that the carrier can control in their network settings; that way the blame can rest on cause.

True, but its an ongoing limit from AT&T and I see the new PlayStation Vita will have the same limitation.

It may have been created with American markets in mind but ironically, in the South African context I would say it is anything but daft.

With an out of bundle rate of R1.20 per mb one can't be too cautious.

Personally I reckon the 3G iPad is daft when one can so easily tether the wifi version to one's cell phone and they R1k cheaper.

Rather take the R1k saving and get a Wireless 3G portable hotspot modem Huawei E585.

I agree in hind sight it probably has its merits... What doesn't make sense is that Apple allowed the carrier's to control tethering activation via carrier settings, so why hasn't this been applied to the download limit.
