Hey guys,

I need some advice on an i7 build. Any relevant comments will be appreciated. Budget isnt too high so not really keep to go extreme. I will be using this for general office/web and 3d modelling.

Current Build Idea
CPU:i7 920
RAM:corsair 3x2gb ddr 1600
HD:Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500gb
Motherboard: Asus P6T SE
Graphics Card:Asus HD 4670
PSU:Coolermaster xtreme power 550w
Case:Coolermaster RC-310

Total is currently R8600 incl tax

Thanks :)

For starters you're gonna want tri channel memory, 3x2GB 1600MHZ is generally the best option. I would not go for a Seagate HDD either, rather do a WD 500GB black edition. I would take a look at the CM Scout as a case, I have one and they are awesome.

What is your total budget? If you're not OC'ing you could get a cheaper motherboard.

Where are you located? I bet I could beat any quote you get online.

I would also consider a slightly more powerfull PSU for future proofing

Ok you are putting together an i7 system with 4650?

You don't game right?

You should rather go with an i5 system and use the money saved for something like 4870/4890, you will see far better results gaming wise.

That i7 with that vga card is going to kuk off playing the latest games. So much cpu power so little gpu power is not right for gaming.

Infact even something like a q9300 with a 4890 will perform better.

????

you might be short there too........

only if he gets a 5850 or so..

im running more then that on a 550 :/

Rather go for the msi x58m motherboard, should be around R500 cheaper than the asus. Then use that money on getting 3 x 2GB DDR3 or an ATI 4850.

Thanks for the replies :) I dont play games and I will only play Diablo 3 & Starcraft 2 when they are released. I have a ps3 for games. I do 3d modelling/animation so 8gb of ram is essential.

Paul, ill look into that motherboard.

OIC well then yea that vga card will be perfect, seems like a good built then.

Just check the specs though for those games but that card seems fine.

Is no one listening to the fact that i7 is trip channel so you need 3-6-12 GB ram...

Clearly not. I run 3 X 2G = 6, and it runs all my CAD very sweetly thank you very much. Also on a 4650 1GB @ 1920 X 1200, but holding out for a 5850 for Dirt 2 :D

There's very little to no performance increase between tri channel and dual channel RAM.

That mobo is overkill for office use though

I would opt for a cheaper mobo and get tri channel ram, 3d card is fine for modeling imo
4650 might be good enough for Diablo 3 and SC 2

No, you are still not listening. Tri-channel, you need to use multiples of 3.

Oh soz...I thought the 3 modules would be in tri-channel and the third would be on its own (aka im a noob). Ok ill get 6gb then.

Sapphire HD4670 instead of the HD4650 for R80 more worth it?

I can buy an Intel X58So SmackOver or an ASUS P6T SE for R300 less than the Gene II mobo. Which should I take?

Get the standard P6T, its better than the SE. Also the 4670 is worth the extra money IMO. It has DDR3 while the 4650 has DDR2

Forgot to mention the 4670 is only 512mb vram while 4650 is 1GB. The standard P6T is the same price as the Gene II where I'm buying from.
