iBust is too expensive, and too slow (1Mb/s)
What's with the 24month / 36Month lock in?

Canceled my iBust last month and switch to Cell-C
 
Blah, big deal, what about existing customers? Oh I forgot, iBust doesn't care about us, going to get my CellC speed stick next week and then it's bye bye! Get with the times guys!
 
about the afrihost referral special, will i get 50% off the high usage accounts where i'd already get double the bandwidth until march next year? and how long will i get 50% off for?

my line was recently upgraded to 8 meg, mweb uncapped just ain't cutting it no more :twisted:

Beware of any orange branded company offering internet solutions....Iburst, Neotel, one is as useless as the other and both are in denial about the quality of service and price offering. They are both an absolute joke. Why anyone would get Iburst or Neotel if they had other alternatives is beyond me. they should have themselves committed.

I have to agree with you!!! Have had bad experiences with Neotel myself and heard bad things about iBurst. Buyers be aware!!!

Where I live in Montana Park in Pretoria we have had no choice but to use iBurst. We have no Telkom 3g, no Vodacom 3g, no MTN 3g and no Neotel anything coverage... but now we do have cell-c HSDPA+ coverage!
I cancelled my iBurst subscription in November, told me the sub will only end in December... thats fair. I got an invoice today for January??? I phoned and they claim I cancelled the cancellation. What on earth are these people trying? Had to issue a stop order, maybe they only get the message then. Just beware that if you cancel with them, make sure by follow up calls that is was done properly. I though I would use them in the future again... Now I am really glad I cancelled, I don't think they will see me again... ever.
 
iBurst Wireless’ speed of 1 Mbps is also not particularly competitive in the local broadband market, especially when compared to Cell C’s 21 Mbps and even Neotel’s 3.1 Mbps.

The MyBroadband site can be easily viewed at 128 kb/s, never mind 1 Mb/s, 21 Mb/s or 3.1 Mb/s.

Err... this site actually isn't one of the fastest. Either because of the aging Hetzner/MTN infrastructure or because of vBulletin's bloated html output, doesn't really matter I wish you luck with 128kbps. I thought iBurst no longer had that soft cap so wouldn't you be capped when you reached their low usage limits?

Nothing to do with iBurst. Configure a 128kb/s session on a switch e.g. ED-ES5808P and you won't notice the difference in experience between that or 10 Mb/s when browsing to mybroadband.co.za You can also experiment with this using the QoS module of the tomato firmware.

Another example is youtube. This video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UE3xTHtgmTs downloads at 800kb/s and is fully downloaded by the time only 40% has been viewed. Most video codecs operate in the 128kb/s to 2Mb/s range. Likewise voice codecs are 9 kb/s to 64kb/s.

eMail operates without noticing at 64 kb/s.

With gaming download speed is immaterial as it is latency that counts.

Alternatively there isn't any "creative commons" content of any size that cannot be downloaded overnight at lower speeds.

A more accurate analysis is required than unilaterally declaring speed as an absolute metric. Flame on, where am I wrong on my analysis of usage speeds?
 
Nope, just realised I've actually been had. When did MyBroadband become the metric for measuring a service? Not saying you're wrong but if Telkom suddenly made all lines 128kbps, because that is afterall all you really need for browsing, most people will not be very happy. iBurst can stick with their slow AND expensive service. I'll stick with even just 1 of Cell C's Gs in the meantime while they go under.

The majority of Telkom lines sold are 384kb/s.
 
When Iburst starts selling on speed instead of on cap then we can talk, bring out 128K,256K,512K and 1Mb uncapped shaped and unshaped packages then we can talk again. Till then you will remain the service provider to those who cannot go anywhere else.

Iburst used to be competitive with ADSL(actually cheaper) but now its just bloody expensive. Sadly enough I used to sing your praises but when no real change came about I simply moved on.

Cmon how about:

128k - R250
256k - R350
512k - R550
1024k - R750

Happy with shaped on these, then we can talk again

Did we first build good quality, safe roads that allowed for high speeds and then fast cars followed? No, cars became faster and as a result road infrastructure and speed limits increased.

In the same way content pushes the boundaries of networks and thus the networks must keep track.

If a consumer can watch a Hi-Def stream, why would he want to watch a crappy quality one? Would you?

E-mail might have been OK at 64kb/s a few years ago,but today requires high speed connections using the rich content we take so much for granted with multi-megabyte attachments. Let me send you a mail with a funny 8MB video clip and let's see how happy you are to wait hours for it to download.

To try and justify a slow access network because something else in the end-to-end path is also slow is absurd. Would you be happy with con-rods in your car's engine that can only be revved up to 2500rpm as that is the revs your car requires to do 120Km/h in the highest gear?

Networks evolve by constantly improving the slowest elements in the path. Two such examples over the last year include international and last mile access. In both cases we've seen dramatic improvements and every time richer content were already there waiting to use it.

To try and justify ancient technology the way you do is futile.

iBurst is stuck at a speed that's not deemed relevant to current requirements. It's like your grandfather saying he's happy to drive at 80Km/h on the freeway and therefore everyone else should be happy to do it as well.

Answer this; If you could upgrade iBurst tomorrow to run at 8Mb/s or even 16Mb/s, would you still have argued as you did above?

Why on earth are mybb throwing iburst and afrihost announcements in one article here and then focussing on iburst only? Is the Afrihost part so that we don't attack the entire article ?

Of course not.

Analogies are like buckets of water with a holes in them, you can only carry them so far...

So what has cars, roads and speed have to do with the discussion? As an example, if you travel at the speed of light away from our planet there is an infinitely high probability that you will not encounter another extra terrestrial life form in your lifetime, so does that mean absolute speed is meaningless or a leaky bucket?

Speed has its merits (mostly for video and nothing else). The fact remains that there is an overwhelming amount of content accessible on the net via slow speeds that cannot be discounted (of which this website is an example).

The speed required to manage a 10 Gb/s optical switch = 9600 baud. Does that make 10 Gb/s optical switches ancient technology?
