iBurst Speed Test Results

Just did a speed test on my iBurst... locally only.

Midrand - Neology: download 0.52Mbps, upload 0.28Mbps, ping 103ms

I have been an iBurst customer for a couple of years and their service has been tremendous on their helpline, but I am so frustrated these days with the incredibly slow download speed. It is a pain trying to read newspapers - to turn a page takes ages.

What is going on?

Way way waaaaaaaaay better than this morning.

But still running at half the speed it used to be. Please iBurst, make a plan with the overloaded towers.

We pay for "up to 2Mbps", but since release of the new packages, speeds have halved. Will you cut our monthly payments in half because of half the speed? No, though not........

Isie, I'm in Joburg, 2Mb modem. Looking good for me.

1.72 down, 0.40 up

Int (UK):
1.48 down, 0.51 up

Extra Capacity base stations have been planned and are being added in the following areas:
- Waverly (Pretoria area)
- Primrose (Eastrand area)
- Randparkridge (Westrand area)
The temporary base stations at Heidelberg and Roodekrans are being converted to permanent.

What this means, even though you might not be in the area, is that the load on any bordering base station will also improve.

I'm guessing / hoping that Randparkridge will help alleviate congested towers in my area
 
New tower in Waverly will do nothing for the speeds by us, it is +-11km and plenty hills in between. No line-of-sight possible.

Local -

Download Speed: 957 kbps (119.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 227 kbps (28.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 157 ms

International -
Test conducted on 25 March 2012 08:20:25 PM
Download Speed: 447 kbps (55.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 179 kbps (22.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 438 ms

So still running at half the download speed we had in November/December 2011.
 
Signals are picked up at up to 10 km, so even if you are not within LOS of a tower someone else is and will move when a new tower comes up. This results in all towers in the neighbouring areas having more load ability.

Today I went past Primrose, which is supposed to be a high load bts. (Achieved 0.96 Mb/s). (So making the assumption that all problems are load related is not correct)
