iBurst very slow

It's such basic advice/methodology that I think the best place for it would maybe be in the Broadband Ratings Report, the purpose of which is to help people choose a broadband connection based on importance of each of the rating categories that matter to each individual - not so much as Telkomonopoly would have people thinking that one broadband service (which is not available everywhere) is always better than another service.

RPM, does availability/coverage have a weighting in the ratings formula?

I am going to send RPM a link to that post, but I am thinking it would perhaps be useful to have a "Tips for Choosing a Broadband Service" thread somewhere where everyone can give advice that will help forumites, as well as provide input into the BBRz.

Biovolt, don't buy the modem upfront, at least you can cancel the contract as soon as you find a better alternative before having to just "go with the flow" because of your investment in the modem.
 
Just a casual check-in seeing as my link is up and moderately acceptable for the last hour.

THE PROBLEM AT BRYANSTON TOWER IS STILL NOT FIXED.

Still getting constant disconnects and shaddy speeds; like something in the shady pines region.

Can't see the sky for the clouds for the trees.

Can't I use the same modem for sensuck and Ibust? Can I cansel a contract b4 the 2 years is over :confused:

I want to know what the speed performance is like in my area which is Edgemead,the goodwood map says it`s in a near dark green area.

Where I can find someone to test the area out near the Engen garage just before the road that leads to Century City,my house is around there.

Would love to dump my dial up,don`t want Telkom.
 
Ok, just back from WBS - went to fetch me an external antenna which Dylan organised for me (it isn't the hockey puk - it's one o' them newfangled rectangular box thingies).

Anyways I do have it connected right now - using the supplied elastic band [LOL :D] which hooks round the UTD to keep the hogtail in place.

I don't know if it's directional or omni - there's no red arrow indicating a direction to point it in, the guys @ WBS weren't too sure about the polarity, so for the moment I just have it horizontal.

I still need the background ping, and there are still loads of Request timed outz, and so far 48% loss as I write this. I am running BBST ATM, if speed is greatly improved I will monitor it & post an update. From what I can guess, methinks the extant is directional, and I suppose I have to find a way of suspending it from the ceiling towards the East so I can get the signal over my permiter wall...

I am happy 2 have the extant - just need to do a bit of 'n boer maak 'n plan :) with that ceiling suspension & sweet spot searching.

I also asked about the cause of the problem with Bryanston-BS, the answer I got (from a source that I still trust & was happy to have met face 2 face for the 1st time :)), was that there is a software problem on both Bryanston-BS & Northcliff-BS that is scheduled to be fixed on/by the 14th. Anyways it has to do with the coverage area & in theory the antenna arrays could be pointed downward a bit as a temporary fix, the upside I would be happy, the downside is that it'd decrease the coverage area and therefore cut-off people outside the adjusted coverage area - something like that anyways.

So, I will see what happens on/before the 14th, failing that a few days before the end of March - deciding factor as to whether I cancel the ADSL application or not :).
 
thx for the info ic - the service from these two towers have been a bit degraded the last month or so. My brother tested my UTD in the JHB CBD for two weeks and it flies. Single dl's easily 40 - 60 KB/s and it doesn't drop the modem at all. IP addresses at bryanston and northcliff seem to 'freeze' after a while and the speed totally degrades, it requires a re-connect to get up to speed again. I use the term 'speed' loosely.
 
With the external antenna in correct orientation & "schweet spot"

Well it seems to be a tad more stable & slightly more snappy with the extantrectbox, but nowhere near half download speed, in fact it is 10% of the maximum download speed (just over 1Mbits/s) that I was getting back in November & December 2004. Upload speed seems better, but also nowhere near what it should be.

I am going to continue testing & will monitor the speed to see whether there is a time-of-day-type-improvement - I am hopeful...

I just wish the WBS radio dudes were prepared to come out & run whatever tests etc - I feel like I have been treading water for the last 2.29 months. I suppose Emil et al really don't have the time considering launch countdown has begun...

Well, I am feeling the speed at the moment. I'm downloading CentOS iso files from a UK server and it going at about 60 Kbytes / sec. This is the first time I've had decent speeds for about 4 weeks.

It's flying through the download. Thanks Iburst. Looks like Northcliff Tower may be coming right. Else all the bandwidth whores haven't got electricity or something!!! :p
 
Lucky for you. I've been experiencing blazing speeds for the past two weeks and now its trickling in. Im lucky if Im getting 25K at the moment.

Oh well, guess thats iBurst for you. Its good, then its not, then its good, then its not, and then finally, just before its meant to become good again, the authentication server won't allow you onto the iBurst network.

Another victory for SA broadband. :(

FTP speeds?

Hi I am using the infamous Northcliff tower. Lately things have been bearable with short-lived bursts of speeds up to 150 kb/s. I CAN actually browse at the moment! Yay!

However, I am experiencing consistently bad speeds uploading my work through FTP to the server at my work (located in Braamfontein! It's not like it's overseas) and I just had to go through a speed of 0.50 kb/s for the WHOLE 1.3 GB batch of files. Anybody else with the same problem?

Somebody here suggested constant pinging. Well, I did that and it helps ALOT. I just thought you might be interested in yesterdays ping results (parts, but the whole picture was consistent):

How much longer is this going to be the reality. This has to be the only place in the world where a constant ping is a prerequisite for a connection to work!!!! Shaun, if you read this, I would love to hear your explanation of why the constant ping works.

If those were my regular pings I would be too embarrassed to post them here. They are just plain shocking. Basically, you are driving along in a car with slashed tyres, smashed windows, and a jammed gear box.... and yet you are still wondering wtf is wrong.

SIMPLE. YOUR CONNECTION IS BROKEN. GET IT FIXED. IF THEY CAN'T FIX IT, GIVE IT ALL BACK TO THEM AND GET A REFUND.

And Drastik, if this is your reality then the same advice applies.
 
Just an upfate on the newfangled ExtAntRectangualrBox, download speed does not seem to be drastically improved, however it does look like there is a noticeable (not drastic, just noticeable) improvement on upload speed & stability.

The special MyADSL BBST testing license has expired (so it appears), and it kept crashing out on the Type Mismatch error ever since I got & attached the EARB, that was followed by a spate of MDAC complaints from BBST yesterday, and today I just tried running it again & now it wants me to give it my credit card details. Oh well it was impressive while it lasted.

Now back to LSM results...

I was warned that the EARB wouldn't make a vast difference, and that the s/w update on/before the 14th should sort out everything on Bryanston-BS. Still :confused: about that bcos I don't see how the a s/w change is gonna get the signal to/from me any better when the array is pointing away (perhaps it's them signal concentrator thingies that sommer gooi the signal at your UT) - just as well I'm not an iBurst technician ;).
