Idiots on bikes

i don't even know if it's worth it :) i'm talking to people who - by the evidence of their own mouths - are sitting in traffic fervently praying for someone to get seriously hurt.

eugenics has never seemed like a better idea than today. :) it's a pity there are so many moral flaws in the idea.

Sorry, I meant the Troll has arrived.

oh no - you caught me. i'm sorry i interrupted all the sanctimonious opinionating and earnest wishes for the bloody death of strangers.

Perhaps it's best if bikers reach a consensus on which lane to use, and then stick to it, so that motorists can safely make way for them.

It's unfair for them to use random lanes, expecting motorists to keep dodging left and right to avoid them, and then blaming motorists for posing a danger to them.

that's a great idea. mail it off to the THINK BIKE team and see if they get behind it. they also do rider training and awareness, and so they they can maybe get the idea some legs in the motorcycle community. (http://www.thinkbike.co.za/projects/other-projects).

if a dedicated rule of law defined a channel for bikes, my life, for one would be much easier.

i really am going now. :)

AFAIK scooters are not allowed on highways - Any motor bike below 125cc isn't allowed on the freeway.

Incorrect.
>50cc is allowed on the highway. Yes, that means 51cc is okay, but 50cc is not.
Yes, you can ride on the highway on your 51cc lawnmower, as long as you can go the minimum speed limit (40).

Also - I am a biker. I commute between Centurion and Bryanston daily. From the moment I get on my bike I "THINK CAR."
I also THINK TRUCK, THINK TAXI, THINK PEDESTRIAN, THINK HAWKER and THINK SAFETY.
I say thanks to drivers who move over for me (When I am safely able to lift a hand off the steering). I cannot for even one moment let my concentration slip because lane-splitting is not only scary but potentially dangerous when done recklessly. I have to admit that only 1 in 10 of the other bikers I encounter on the road do it right or safely.

The reason for the THINK BIKE campaign being named as such is simply because we are able to, and allowed to, and going to very suddenly appear behind you or next to you in traffic. Something to do with you being stuck in that 10kmph jam, and us still travelling at speed. And you checking out that hot chick next to the road, or the pretty sports car coming from the other side, or the guy trying to sell you stuff, or your blasting radio that drowns out the sound of my purposely loud engine. It was just to get people to realise that bikers already THINK CAR (or should) and it would be good if cars would try to THINK BIKE too.

It was also to spread the word about what is legal and what is not for bikes to do. Many people (and I get at least 5 a day) are acutely aware of my presence behind them but feel that it is their purpose in life to educate me in the (incorrect) rules of the road by purposely blocking the way and preventing me from passing. Or maybe they're just jealous jerks? Its not only legal to lane split, it is encouraged as it reduces congestion. It is also unlawful for a vehicle to block your way or prevent you from passing them.

Here's one polite biker saying thank you to all the cars out there that see me and move over for me.

I'll tell you what irritates me... These damn motorists in their little tin cans! Especially the new mommies with the baby on board signs in the back window. They should watch where they're going. Hell, I don't care if your toddler's distracting you or your boss calls you on your cell and in your moment of distraction, you float into my lane. I am driving in that lane with my RAM (the one with the massive bullbars) and your insignificant little piece of tin will be crushed without me even noticing. Oh dear, your husband's left without a wife and children because I wasn't paying attention or because I just didn't care? Tough! She should've been driving more carefully! My truck also eats those puny little 4x4s (think Hilux, Fortuner, etc.), so while you're slicing your piece of biltong or killing your smoke, if you happen to drift into my lane, I will kill you. Your little 2-ton tin doesn't stand a chance against my bigger, better armored, 7500kg truck!

guys guys guys ! and gals

I started the thread to moan about the guys in the emergency lane lol, focus!

Well it's funny how with so little reaction time, some bikers here are able to see exactly what motorists do inside their cars.

all bikers are idiots.... at least all those who I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. :(

What gets me is this very visible "Think Bike" campaign.
I don't see the sense behind it.
Surely the bikes should be riding in a manner that makes them visible, safe and accepted as normal road users.
And yet by far the large majority (almost 100%) of all Bike Riders who go past me are ...

1) exceeding the speed limit.
2) pushing between cars moving at high when it is clearly unsafe to do so.
3) moving too close to vehicles, both behind and alongside.
4) rude, impatient and arrogant

Jeez dude - sure, there are rude, irresponsible bikers just as there are rude irresponsible drivers - the sad reality for those bikers who are not irresponsible is that cars far, far outnumber bikes - responsible bikers are VERY aware and alert to all the cars around them - every single time I get on a bike my approach is that I am "invisible" to most cars and I therefore am hyperalert to what is happening around me at all times (I have had car drivers look directly at me and still turn into my path regardless of who had right of way - in spite of the fact that I wear high visibility (neon) clothing) - I assume at all times that the car driver cannot see me and therefore adjust my riding appropriately.

The Think Bike campaign is simply about trying to remind car drivers that there are bikers sharing the road with them and to remind bikers that they are sharing the road with cars.

PS: The idiot bikers deserve every bit of vitriol thrown at them - they make the road more dangerous for ALL of us.

Thank you to all the considerate drivers and bikers

Bikes are air-cooled so need to keep running at a reasonable speed. I move over for them.

ROFL'd! Just like most cars are effectively air-cooled as well. And the ones that really are air-cooled, can idle in the same spot until they run out of petrol and still be fine (it's called engineering design).

Anyways. Driving in CT, I've never had the problem of pissant bikers but I hear tales of those ****ers in JHB splitting down the lane and hitting car mirrors. What I do know is that if I see some tosspot in my mirror doing the same, I'm changing lanes a sec before he gets to me so that he learns how somersaults work (don't care about damage to the car, easily fixed). But yes, so far have seen only respectable bikers here. I think JHB is the issue.

P.S. @Nocturnity: Does your car have "Richelieu" written on every panel as well lol?

Nope. Just lots of dings and scratches from the little cars I drive into because they're not looking where they're going. :D

Oh, I also ride bikes so I look at cars the same way cars look at bikes and I reason with the "victims" the same way I used to be reasoned with. It's fun!

I'm of the opinion that an experienced bike rider makes a better(defensive) car driver. When you commute on a bike you tend to pay much more attention to what's going on around you and in the distance, it teaches you to think for that unaware idiot driving his car around like a lost fart in a haunted sh*thouse.

On a bike you are always assessing the situation and anticipating what's going to happen next.

If I were in charge I would make it law that you must ride a motorcycle for 2 years before you can obtain a car licence.
