...please ask them what criteria they used to decide that you are a "power user".

Please also state your line speed & how you use the account (newsgroups, torrents, streaming etc.) & whatever else you feel may be relevant.

It's only when you find ways to bypass the shaping do they mind.
 
I got called, cancled my account.

They say that i was using it heavly over the last 3 months. When i told them that i only download afterhours so to lessen the load, they then started resisting and said i have been using a vpn. (what i have done to bypass the hetic shapping)

The usage is what sets off the alarm, then they did up anything else to inforce it... Pity... Hopefully they loose many clients over this.

I agree, the more clients mweb lose the better, maybe they will wake up. Should have known what would happen when they started their uncapped service advertising "as much data as you want"
 
Shaping is there for a reason to prevent network congestion.

Sure they advertised "as much data as you want" but it does not give you a valid excuse to bypass their shaping.

Using a VPN is surely not in contravention of the T&C. Many companies/organizations/institutions/universities require that a VPN be used for access.

Are they possibly totalling how much ENCRYPTED data you are transferring each month? Does that require them to do deep packet inspection to determine the protocol and whether it's encrypted or not? I can't see that MWeb is running DPI over all their users ... :wtf:
 
Perhaps if there "shaping" worked better i wouldnt have to.

I have monitored graphs etc and can clearly see that its a limit based shaping not "what is being used" shapping. Either way, it makes good bussness sense for them, but bad for us. Lets see whats around the corner.

Nothing agains MWEB, I just hope this dosnt put South Africa back in the terms of uncapped pricing. Interesting move with the new cable going live...

No but they can see someone using a VPN very heavily, ie: transfering 100's of gigs accross it and also its destination IP. They would judge by that, I'll be honest when I use my work vpn its mainly as a remote desktop session so the traffic volume would be relatively light, nowhere near 100's of KB per second.

Its silly anyway, you can use torrentbox's to download your torrents via HTTP anyway, does that mean that you are going against the T&C's? There are many ways to skinn a cat, they just dont want anyone to do any skinning.

I would have expected a warning at least, but "Upgrade" or "P1SS off" was the options i got

Well their obvious response is that these accounts are meant for home users, not business users.

I am not even using anything to avoid the shaping, all i ask is that at 7pm until 6am i get full or at least half speed on my line, not a measley 45kbson a 4meg line

Actually I know what they using, and they can tell exactly what you doing on your account. You would be surprised what today's equipment can do, and it can easily handle the users, the more users you have the more equipment you throw at the problem. Much like have more and more routers as your routers also have a bandwidth limit.

They are not a problem, it depends how they are utilising the vpn not that they are using a vpn.

From MWEB: Third party services which actively seek to bypass these rules, such as seedbox type services, or vpn tunelling with the express purpose of bulk downloading at line speed are not permitted for use on our uncapped products

A home user can use a VPN to connect to the office to get a file or to connect to a university network to access some resources. I can't see that they expect you to have a business account at home to be able to VPN into your business.
