I don't know what they're using, if anything, so I can't say. What I can say is that they better know exactly what they're doing if they're sniffing/saving/running DPI over all their users. They would be putting themselves in a privacy-infringement position which would be very difficult to defend I presume.
 
they made it very "clear" that they dont look into what we doing, the guy on the phone stated that, but thumbled around it.... There is no dobut they watching what we do
 
Well so glad that I cancelled my MWEB account yesterday! Ha they can call me and then what? They gonna cancel my account?
 
Interesing question,

If i get the 384k connection and DL 24x7 for a month, i can pull upto 100gigs. This will be well below what other users are pulling and likely under the radar?

A big clue might be who are are logging into an international VPN. Use of local bandwidth via a VPN seems unlikely to trigger the same reaction IMHO.

How would you feel should 4 or more users on your DSLAM start downloading like crazy and impede your ADSL connection negatively? Will you still be happy, or will you moan?
 
your DSLAM shoudl support what they have sold! If you selling 4x10meg connections, you sure as hell better be able to support that.

.. sigh. Like people have already said, obviously using a VPN isn't again any rules and won't get you thrown off the service. He even said he's using the VPN to bypass their shaping rules. Obviously this isn't allowed.

It's not like this was complicated or anything from the first post.

I think my exchange is so overloaded sadly. When does the call come? How many gb's? Nice thing with the call is no one month notice i guess :D.
 
Yeah so the downloading will get even better once all the heavy users have cancelled

I doubt it, from what I have seen, they can see exactly what you do but not the actual content, so privacy laws aint broken. For example they would be able to say you doing 300gb on a VPN that terminates somewhere in London, and might just not like it. If the VPN terminates in SA and you do only 5% of your traffic to that then it is fine. Its mostly a graphic display that looks like a super cool chart showing what you doing.

Thing is, many ISPs run these devices, I just don't see how they would be doing it if it was going against some law...
 
Using a VPN to bypass p2p shaping is obviously not allowed. I don't think they will mind if you use a reasonable amount but some people just cross the line so badly that its no wonder ISP's have to step in.
 
So far it looks like only 4MB users doing more than ~500gb are being targeted. The emerging picture is that they are targeting 'high' users and fishing for reasons to terminate their service, and from the T&Cs it seems like the they apparently don't even need a reason to do so. I encourage anyone affected by this to threaten them with false advertising; based on what we were told by the MWEB rep/s here when the service was first announced (I'm sure we can dig up some juicy tidbits). That what the MWEB rep/s have said here in the past may conflict with some of the current T&Cs should not be relevant to whether it amounts to false/misleading advertising.

personally i don't see the problem using a seedbox to get pis poor seeded torrents. i would love to see for example who is going to sit through a 72 hour download of final fantasy 14's beta client just because their downloader is ****ty. problem was solved using a seedbox, from there easy download... limited at 250kB/s.

no harm done.

curious though, is things like low ping going to considered illegal, not to mention what if i have to vpn to work...

They offer two uncapped products, a home/soho and then the internet addict. Just from the pricing it's very clear that they can't offer the cheaper home account to everyone doing 500GB+ a month, because like you say they want a profit. And if they leave all of these people on the network it's probably either no profit for them or a terrible service for everyone else so that these few can download (this is at the extreme, right now I doubt they'll kick more than 50 or so people off their network). Guess why no one except a few people on MyADSL would care at all that they tell extremely heavy users to upgrade or cancel?

And I mean it's not like you can't download more content that you could ever watch/listen to/install in a month. So it's fair if you ask me.

Im not using it to download at all.

And Paying 699 for an unshaped account is out of the question as I mostly Game with this account.

Then no one will mind, there's nothing saying you're not allowed to use VPN. You're not allowed to bypass their shaping that's all. People of course try to blow this thing up as if MWeb are so evil when they try to give the vast majority of their users a better service.
