Now there's something I don't disagree with in principle. Obviously we can't have an expulsion every time someone coughs - at least if someone wants to be there - but in principle it's a much better idea than violence.

Schools operate like prisons, let's face it... Their main purpose is to house and keep busy rather than to educate. If the nature of the system is that of a prison, then it's hardly surprising if some people start to act as though they are in one.

I blame public education itself.

I think we still have a place for corporal punishment. In schools and in our police system.
For some people the naughty corner is not going to work.

Some people probably shouldn't be in school to begin with. Some people shouldn't have kids.

Harsh? I think it's better than the alternative. The problem isn't evil children, for God's sake, it's mass-producing children and expecting them all to fit nicely into the same production cycle.

(granted if you'd raised your child properly in the first place it wouldn't get this bad, but yeah)

That's hardly fair. I habitually walk into a room drinking, smoking, and swearing at something/someone under my breath. It's just how I roll.

I'd only be angry with the little **** if it were MY cigarettes/booze he were smoking. Otherwise, **** it, he can learn what a hangover feels like for himself. What's the worst he's gonna do? Fail a test? It's better to act like an idiot when you're a teenager - when you're an adult, you actually have responsibilities you can screw up.

ETA: Obviously I'd intervene if he became a raging alcoholic, but I'd also intervene if grandma become one, and I can assure you that I wouldn't hit her either.

The best solution is not to have kids, or limit your need to reproduce to one child less than you are able to cope with and raise them properly.

Unfortunately in places like the UK, people go ape when churning out babies so that they can qualify for bigger state benefits. They can't cope, their kids turn into chavs, and then they wonder why it got beat up.

+100 I agree people should apply to have kids. You do not get problem children but problem parents. But parents want to be friends and not the bad guy.
But it still does not solve the problem. I feel you did not turn out bad for a child that was punished when they were naughty.
Most people I know did not. Most people I know that were not moered are not worth my time or money. They end up being more trouble than not.

The employment issue they put a good foot infront and 3 months later you have a monster.
 
There's a lesson most of us learn from young is that if you keep showing off in front of your mates, one day you gonna get beat the f**k up or end up killing yourself doing something stupid. This kid should consider himself very lucky. Maybe one day he would've met someone who would have a gun or a knife and would've wasted him away, so lesson learned for him hopefully.

That doesn't get you anywhere in life, buddy. Your parents teach you to have manners and to be respectful, you're being groomed for a life flipping burgers.

The trick is to know right from wrong. Manners are a luxury - you use them when you want someone to like you.

No, let's take this slowly now, and repeat after me, boundaries, accountability and some self-discipline. If all means of imposing non-violent sanction are removed, some descend into violence when provoked.

Decent human beings never, EVER, inflict violence against children, they just roll-over and take it. When the child is 18, he/she is subject to adult sanction. All of a sudden things aren’t so easy, jail terms or the death penality await. And all because no idea of moderate behavior was instilled at an appropriate age.

You can keep your method of raising children thank you very much.... letting a 13yr old drink and smoke just so they can experience a hangover... sounds like brilliant parenting to me.

If my 13yr old child came in smoking and drinking alcohol and swearing at me...they would get backhanded and then grounded and have all priviledges revoked for a BLOODY long time.

I doubt a little sh^t like this will learn anything and will label himself as a victim.

But yes, sooner or later he's going to step in brown stuff that he can't wipe off his shoe.

No, unfortunately for your warped view on reality.. Manners show people what kind of person you are, and the fact that you think manners are only used if you want someone to like you shows EXACTLY what kind of person you are.

Maybe we are all missing the point.

If corporal punishment in it's intended manner can be applied then it would be unlikely for teachers to be wound up like that.

I have to agree with Toxic on this one. I generally avoid people who are extremely sweet when they want something, then treat you like ****e once they don't need you anymore.
