'I'll teach you to **** off'

A 14-year-old schoolboy bludgeoned with a metal dumbbell by his teacher was the "leading light" in trouble in his classroom, a court heard on Tuesday.

The boy had been in trouble for disrupting classes nine times before he was attacked by science teacher Peter Harvey at All Saints' Roman Catholic School in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, the court was told.

He suffered a fractured skull after the 50-year-old allegedly battered him around the head with a 3kg dumbbell after his lesson descended into "uproar".

A witness said teacher Peter Harvey acted "possessed" when he caught up with the boy who had sworn at him

Today, Rex Tedd QC, defending, accused the boy of being a "leading light" behind trouble in the classroom on July 8 of last year.

Nottingham Crown Court heard that the last thing the boy remembered was swearing at Harvey, who replied: "I'll teach you to **** off."

A video of the interview the boy gave to police was shown to the court.

In it, the boy, now 15, is slumped on a sofa wearing blue jeans and a black hooded top. The left side of his face was swollen.

He said: "I can remember all the class being noisy and rowdy. They were all messing about and there was a girl messing with the blinds. He stamped at her and told her off.

"She swore at him and walked at him and then some other girls left the class because they felt scared.

"He said something to me and I swore at him. He said, "I'll teach you" and swore at me.

"I can remember being dragged out of the classroom and into the corridor."

Another boy, now 15, witnessed the attack.

In his police interview he said Harvey acted as if "possessed" when he caught up with the alleged victim.

The witness told police: "He said, "What are you doing, you stupid boy?" He told him to "**** off" and he got him round the neck.

"Mr Harvey went mad. He gets him by the neck and collar and drags him out of the class. He was unusually scary, it wasn't normal.

"It was like something had possessed him, you could see he wanted to kill him, sort of thing.

"He was dragging him out at such a rate and pulled him across the corridor. He was so angry it was like he had an extra power to do it.

"(He) is a small boy but he isn't weak or feeble, but Mr Harvey was manhandling him out of the door."

Recalling the attack with the dumbbell, the witness added: 'He was just striking him with it and was just saying "die, die, die". (He) was on his heels leaning back.

"Blood was pouring out of his face. I thought he was dead. His eyes were open and I thought he was dead.

"He (Harvey) came out looking calm, like he hadn't done anything. A teacher had his arm around him."

Harvey had worked at All Saints' Roman Catholic School in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, for 16 years.

But he had been off work for four months with stress and depression after confiding to a colleague he "could not be trusted' and might "harm someone".

Earlier the court heard the boy attacked by Harvey had been at the school for three years.

That day he had been typing up his English coursework on a computer before his science lesson with Mr Harvey.

The teacher had planned to do an experiment with the class but due to bad behaviour had asked them to copy out material from text books.

Rex Tedd QC, defending, put it to the victim that he regularly disrupted lessons.

Mr Tedd said: "On nine occasions in the last year you deliberately disrupted the teaching of your class. Can you remember anything about that?"

"No," replied the boy.

"My suggestion is that you were a leading light in the trouble in that took place in that class."

"No," repeated the teenager.

The barrister said: "You're saying you cannot
remember any of the trouble that took place in that classroom?"

"No," the boy said.

Mr Tedd also put it to one of the youngsters in the class, who had earlier told how he tried to drag Harvey off the boy, that pupils would secretly film teachers as the youngsters tried to wind them up.

The footage would then be shown around the school to humiliate the teachers, the barrister said.

He said: "The main point of it, what was so amusing, was that the teacher would be provoked into making a fool of himself."

The boy, now 15, replied: "From time to time, that was the point of it."

Judge Michael Stokes QC, the Recorder of Nottingham, asked the same boy: "Can you explain to the jury what's funny about winding up a teacher who has been off ill?"

The boy replied: "There was nothing funny about him. What was funny was we were just having a good time with our friends." - Daily Mail

There is a world of difference between corporal punishment in schools ( which I support ), and beating a kid with a barbell!

Yup, it was because of freaks like this that corporal punishment got banned.

Actually, this thread has almost nothing to do with catholicism. Except the school where it happened. Its about the abuse of punishment that happens everywhere. You really dont think do you?

it's hard, because i used to go to school with snobs. i'm not defending the guy that beat him, but the kid can't act like he's surprised. it's the same when a young adult runs over a kid during a drag race and cries "we didn't mean it!". and i can also imagine that you have to press a teacher quite far to make them want to literally beat you to death :p

Some people snap because you hold a paper clip the wrong way. This guy sounded unstable from the start.

Agreed, that was way over the top. But if you work with kids regularly you'll know that your hands are tied. In the current system there's no way to discipline a child. As many parents simply don't teach their children manners (many of them don't have manners themselves), you get more and more trouble kids like this one. What the teacher did is unacceptable, but could have been avoided by proper (and balanced!) disciplining of the child earlier. I'm not defending the teacher, but pointing out a problem with the current systems.

Beating a kid with u dumbbell? That's not disciplining, but venting of anger, frustration...

You are 100% correct but.... I can imagine the frustration of this teacher. Let's be honest we have all heard the horror stories of the lack of discipline in the UK school system, not to mention our own. It would be very disingenuous of anybody not to take that into account when reading stories like these.
 
This was bound to happen. It isnt the first time a teacher has snapped and wont be the last. They remove any and all authority from teachers and expect them to be able to put up with the worst brats on the planet. Then the teachers snap and everyone wonders why.

If teachers had some authority, which may include corporal punishment, things would never have escalated to this level. Its only because the government thought his heinie was too precious to be smacked that he thought he could get away with murder, and pushed the teacher as far as he could.
 
My old man use to beat the **** out of me rather often..... I hated him for it but because of the ass he was to me I am now the man I am today.... Where does one draw the line though. There has to be consequences for your actions?! In todays society there aren't any consequences to being a delinquent or a criminal. Most do not get punished the way they are supposed to.
 
Teachers should undergo some kind of orientation course, whereby they are prepared for such behavior. Perhaps from prison services. They're dealing with the same attitudes.
 
This kid got what he deserved,the teacher should beat the shlt out of him in a less public place next time.

I'm with you on this. My friends have children and I see how they behave with adults, their parents and just in general. And when you do tell them to stop something the parents are angry about the poor little misunderstood innocent sweetest angel:mad::wtf:... Hats off to all teachers that are trying though. But i get the snapping part. :o

He would not have reached 50 and be a teacher if he was like this.

I have friends who were teachers and got out in the last few years. Kids do not have boundries and teachers has no tools to work with these kids. You have to ingnore it.
And some kids just keep on pushing the button. If you chase them away you are at fault cause you are denying him education. Any other form of punishment is just ignored.
Parents does not teach respect anymore and hope that schools will but if you have zero respect for your parents how will you have respect for any adult?
 
When i was a kid we had respect for our teachers, and it had nothing to do with corporal punishment. Our parents taught us disciplined and acceptable behavior. And teachers commanded respect, yes there where a few bastards but the majority where good educators that wanted there students to learn. Nowadays pupils are nothing but little hooligans and love to see how far they can go with teachers. A little brat I know was telling me all the nasty things they do to get there teacher to cry so they can have a laugh. Idiots don't want to learn and think school is a place to have fun with there idiot friends.

They beat the shyte out of the crims.. they just do not have parents feeling shocked when it happens.
But yes I agree. I just do not know what.

I think a shame game. Children are not taught the consequences of their actions any more. They think saying sorry is the only thing that is needed and they can co on behaving like they want.
Expulsion that goes on your permanent record for your employer to one day see?
Military school after a certain amount of trouble?
I mean these days they brag about it and it’s a status symbol to have been expelled or to have failed.
 
I feel for the teacher. Sure he was wrong but thats what you get from years of liberal teaching policies in the Nanny State.
They created the climate for this to happen but they wont have to answer for anything.
