Illegal online gambling is a growing problem in SA

What the eff is the reason for it being illegal in the first place? Only then can we determine whether it's a growing problem or not.
 
IANAL but I was under the impression the whole point of the case was because Piggs questioned whether it was illegal or not. That is to say, there appears to be much uncertainty. Hence, surely this guy can't just make blanket statements about "illegal gambling"?
 
They wanted to take it away... this is what will happen if you take things away - especially things people like!
 
I really cant understand the reasoning .. if I want to play poker at night on my PC .. then why the F cant I ??? its my money .. I can do what the F I want with it ..
 
If I host my web application in Las Vegas, is it illegal for South Africans to gamble on my site?
 
Also, what they gonna do if you use to an international site?

The whole problem is taxes. There aren't any tax laws defined properly with online gambling , nor a oversight body. International online gambling is actually illegal as you are still a citizen of this country and bound by its laws/tax laws.

Please note that this does not include bookie gambling online. This is legal and regulated by the various boards.
 
It's illegal because they want to protect the casinos simple as that. It's not a growing problem (socially) it's a growing problem for the casinos pockets.

Which makes sense, the gambling industry robs tax payers of money which in turn needs to go to the system. Ban gambling, period.

How would they know this? Maybe I'm missing something, but they're illegal, unregistered and probably hosted internationally, so how would they know if they were growing or shrinking? I'm not being rhetorical, I really would like someone to suggest how they do this.

The NGB is also relatively unsophisticated, I mean they didn't distinguish between sports betting or online gambling in their initial announcement
 
Its illegal as the guavamint don't get their share - they still want to line their pockets.

10 years imprisonment! Hell you only get 2-3 for murder, and out on 6 months for good behavior.

The worst crime government can think of is when you rob them of money, hence the huge fine on internet gambling

Not really - the worst crime is if they can't rob you of money. Think about it, the money that you win is not theirs, it's yours therefore you aren't robbing them of anything.
 
Yeah, it's more profitable, and is seen as a smaller crime, to be a hitman. Get paid 50 k to take someone out, and if caught just a few hundred bucks bail, or a few years jail - absolute bullsh*t

They should leave online gambling - making it illegal only entices people to do it more. Look at the days when pornography was banned - people were bringing in porn from overseas trips, selling it, and guys were keen to see it. Now that porn is okay in SA, people have lost interest in looking at it.
 
In terms of the National Gambling Act, Parliament was supposed to have drafted additional legislation YEARS ago in terms of which "Interactive (online) gambling" would be regulated. My guesstimate is that this additional legislation is about 10 yeas overdue. My view is that the lack of legislation governing online gambling, and the taking issue with online casinos probably comes from the same place. The bricks and mortar casino's who are loosing money and don't want to see online casino's dilute their market share. If online casino's could be licensed, there is a chance that someone other than existing license holders will get licenses, which means dilution.

Be that as it may, my view is that government has no authority to tell me what I can and can't do with my money. If I want to gamble online, I will. ITS MY MONEY AND I EARNED IT. I hereby declare myself to be exempt from the section of the National Gambling Act relating to interactive gambling. There.. all done...
