I'm dismayed. I received a ticket today.

Seatbelts shouldn't be mandatory. The only argument in their favour is saving someone from their own stupidity. But they are mandatory, so if you are going to drive without wearing one you have to at least rig it so it looks like you're wearing it. On the other hand I've had the police try to bring a fake charge against me for not wearing one (I've used them ever since they were first available).

So you were actually travelling 85-90kph. As long as you don't also do this when other people are on the road. That's just annoying.

There are good arguments for and against motorcycle helmets. It is not a clear case of their enhancing safety. They too also only at best protect someone from their own behaviour. Furthermore it makes no sense to require them for motorcyclists, but then allow them to ride around in shorts and a t-shirt. I've been in an accident where my helmet very clearly prevented my head from being bashed in, but my leathers also bore testament to the huge amount of damage the rest of my body would have sustained without them.

Bicycle helmets are even worse, carrying a number risks to the wearer. Modern helmets don't even provide proper protection for the limited types of impacts they could provide protection against, while simultaneously their design increases the risk of other, more serious, injuries. So things are not as cut and dried as they might appear with safety equipment.

I was driving at 95km/h. I always ... I mean, always, obey the speed limit. I always drive conscientiously and is always polite and courteous to all road-goers and at a four way stop. Driving is a relaxing and safe pleasure to me.

Good, I wish all drivers would actually drive under the speed limit. There would be a lot less people dying on the roads if that was the case. Lawlessness always prevails... Sorry to hear about the fine. You should buckle up... ;)

I was lucky the last time a traffic officer pulled me over for this was on my Birthday. The officer said put on your seat belt, your not getting a ticket today. I still always forget to put on the thing when climbing in the car and literally every time put it on as I start driving.

First I have heard of this, citation? The only think I have heard is that wearing a helmet encourages more risky behaviour, is that what you are referring to?

Not only that but the study clearly quashed the notion that people wearing helmets when cycling engaged in more risky behaviour, concluding that “Non-helmeted cyclists were almost three times as likely to have disobeyed traffic controls as helmeted riders, and more than four times as likely to have been above the blood alcohol limit”

Rather break the speed limit than not wearing your seat belt.

I like how you state driving is a "safe and relaxing experience" for you and then a paragraph later you illustrate that it's not safe at all.

May I ask why on earth you didn't have your belt on? You say it was a short piece of road as it that justifies it somehow?
 
In some cases wearing a seatbelt won't help sweet fokall, but that doesn't mean you mustn't wear one.
 
I think it's all been said before. Not wearing your seat-belt is stupid. Somehow thinking you only have to wear a seat-belt if you exceed the applicable speed-limit is even more so. Thinking that only certain traffic rules may result in a fine - ummm, well, nothing further to add.

After a good day's sailing in Durban bay, a seatbelt on the loo would be very useful.
