Hi All,

I've always been relatively good with what I eat, but over the past few months I've really let my sugar addiction get the better of me. Now it hasn't really affected the way I look but inside I am not doing well. I'll wake up in the mornings feeling hungover, I'm grump when I don't get my fix and to be honest, my biggest worry is diabetes.

So to change all of this I've decided to go 30 days without eating foods that contain added refined sugars. In the hopes of course that after these 30 days I have zero cravings for sugar and can go on with my life without constantly thinking about eating something sweet.

I'm going to try log each day on video so that others can follow me on my journey, I'll share how I'm feeling and anything I find useful that helps curb the cravings.

Here's yesterdays entry for day zero:

Today is day 1 and I am sugar free for 12 hours now - going strong!!!

I'm hoping to get others to join me. To be honest, I need the motivation. Who's with me?

Nice stuff! I started this last year (around this time). My energy levels greatly improved, and I lost 10kg in a few months (granted, I was training quite hard too).

On that, have you seen "That Sugar Film"? Really opened my eyes to the amount of hidden sugars we eat a day, in stuff thats considered "healthy"...
For instance, I tried buying tinned chick peas. Of the 4 brands on the shelf, only one didn't have added sugar.

Hehe, noob, speak back after week :p

Keep going! And join us in the weightloss thread.

I'm not that stringent on leaving out all sugar, but I try to keep it low. Eg. I use xylitol in my coffee/tea, but if I'm at someone else, I'll take a teaspoon of sugar. Or I'll grab a bottled beverage once in a while(maybe once a week)

In the long term I'm not sure of the effects of xylitol/erythritol on the body, but in the short term it seems pretty good. Keeps my teeth much cleaner too.

And have you kept on the "no sugar diet"?

I've seen a couple of doccies on sugar, man it's scary. Another way people get tricked is when buying zero fat foods. They add sugar to account for the lack of flavour because of the zero fat content. It's everywhere!

Wait the xylitol is whitening your teeth? Or you just mean because of not having sugar your teeth are cleaner?

Yes... and no :p I generally go weeks of being quite good, then maybe slip up a little for a day. My GF and also decide to spoil ourselves a bit every now and then, the idea being that we'd have a little bit of chocolate (dark) and know we're having sugar.

Alcohol is the tricky part though. I drink less these days, but its tough when out with mates.

I won't say its whitening it. The Xylitol gets taken up by the bacteria in your mouth, but they lack the metabolic pathways to break it down for energy. So you starve them.

If I open a slab of chocolate, there's no way in hell I don't finish it in one sitting. I have a bachelors on Saturday, neat vodka it is.

This makes me wonder what happens in your stomach :wtf:

Yup - thats our problem too. The GF isn't as good as I am - but I've seen the results on my body, so I'll be sticking with it going forward.

I'm in - apart from maybe a chocolate or some jam on my bread every day, just a little.

What I really can't do without is carbs - and they turn to sugar, which is where my problem lies. I swear it's an addiction whether to sugar or carbs I wouldn't know.

I also wondered about that, but I'm not too worried for the following reasons:

1. You have very few bacteria in you stomach compared to your small intestine, and if IIRC most of the breakdown in the stomach is related to acid.
2. It has to be in contact with bacteria for long enough and in high enough doses to get taken up by them. Your body is also trying to take it up at the same time.
3. I try to keep my intake low.
4. I take a probiotic daily in anyway.

But yes, that is why I only said that it looks good in the short term. I have only used it for about 3 months now.

Hehe a 30 day no sugar challenge in which you allowed a bit of sugar everyday. Sounds like heaven.

Well if you are eating white bread it's usually loaded with sugar.

You cutting out refined carbs too?

Your future children are gonna love this :D

It's a great idea thou. I lack the willpower.

You cutting out refined carbs too?

Over the past year I've cut out refined carbs from most of my meals. Not on purpose really, it just felt like I got hungrier quicker after eating and more often if I ate breads and pastas. My daily carb intake usually consists of oats and fruits. Maybe potato (sometimes sweet) every now and then.

I think for these next 30 days I'll avoid refined carbs just to make sure I'm not getting in any sugar.
