I'm going to war!!! With sugar.

So basically paleo or the more popular 30 day Sleekgeek challenge.

I tried no sugar and any artificial sweeteners (no fruit either) I had a five day headache.

Yeh there's no way I'd cut out fruit.

I've started getting pins and needles in my fingers when they are raised (typing) and am wondering if it's because of the diet.

Agreed. If its natural, I go crazy. So my fruit intake increased :p

Day 4 and I am dropping weight. Pins and needles are still there, but it's not terrible. It's strange but 4 days in and I don't really have any sugar cravings.

I tried to not be hungry, only when the hunger hits that is when the sugar craving sets in.

This is very good lesson though you realise that there is so many added sugars in almost everything.

Woolworths seems to be one of the worst. Even their chicken schnitzels and chicken burgers contain sugar.

Careful of fruit, they can be high in sugar as well and you may find yourself eating more of that to satisfy cravings brought on from withdrawal.

I do LCHF and stick to the lower fruit: berries etc. Now and then some sliced apple in food ( makes cabbage\slaw taste awesome :D ).

If you're hungry, try eat something fatty to kill the hunger pangs. Or as a good general rule of them, drink a glass of water first, then see if still hungry.

Yeh I'm watching my fruit intake. About 2 bananas and an apple a day.

I drink water all day :D It's not that I get hungry, it's just that I want to eat rubbish.

It is not just Woolworths. EVERYONE. I emailed them once asking why they have to add corn starch to their soups. They're very paleo unfriendly and it is ridiculous. They will remove sugar from something and then hike up the price.

There are good and bad sugars, so even though fruit is high in sugar, it's still going to be better for you than anything with refined sugar.

Bananas and apples are quite high in sugar. Previous poster was right, berries are the way to go, surprisingly.

You should try eating double cream yoghurt with the fruit as a snack, the fat helps keep you full.

Can also get something CarbClever-Almond-Cocoa-Nib-Granola- from woolies (or make your own) and throw it in the yoghurt, feels like dessert :)

Not necessarily, one banana @ 100grms contains aprox 12grm of sugar. 5grm of refined sugar would be better for you. Where fruit is better than refined, is when you eat the whole fruit which has other benefits namely additional vitamins, fibre and possibly protein which are obviously lacking in the refined sugar. Also fat and fibre would help you reach a satiation point quicker than just eating sugar.

Good example of this is fruit juice. Fruit juice can be as unhealthy as coke with regards to sugar content as both don't contain any other components to mitigate or slow down the digestion of the sugar delivery by these products.

But not all sugars are the same ;) Bananas only have around 2.7g of fructose (the bad sugar), and 4.2g of glucose (the better sugar). The problem with refined sugar, its often sucrose - which breaks down into both glucose and fructose. So yes, having 1-2g of refined sugar will have much less fructose than a banana. So having a portion of tomato sauce could be worse for you than having a banana :)

But 100% agree on the fruit juice. That was an eye opener for me...

I will never drink anything that has a calorie on it, I will rather eat a fruit than drink a juice.

Fruit has so much sugar but I consume it. I never go over 40g of sugar a day. I usually have two servings of fruit, today was blueberries and banana but usually apple and banana. Which usually makes up like 75% of that 40g.

Also decided to get back onto the wagon yesterday (after weighing myself and seeing that I had gained 3 kilos :/ )

Cut out sugar completely, and have also limited dairy and carbs, combined with intermittent fasting. My daily intake is as follows:
- No breakfast
- perhaps 2 cups of black coffee (with sweetener) at work
- Drink water throughout the day
- When i get home, i cook up a nice piece of steak, chicken or fish with a side of roasted veg.
- As a treat (if you can call it that), i might have one block of Lindt 99% chocolate.
- Need to add some fruit into the mix to quell that sugar craving.

Day 2 and feeling quite good.. but low energy levels and slight dizziness hit around 3pm. (Doesn't help that I smoke as well)

Have some fat. Should help reduce your cravings and give you the slow release you need. Avo's in season are a great source or look at a handful of macadamia nuts as a snack.

What about lunch?

Strangely enough, when I got home at 6:30 last night, after only having coffee and water the whole day; and going to woolies to buy stacks of veg and good snacks; I wasn't really hungry. Ended up just eating a small tub of fruit and about 100g of biltong.

No sugar, limited dairy and carbs, intermittent fasting - just like me :D

I honestly think that's the best method to a healthy lifestyle. But so far IF has the biggest impact - I feel like I have so much more focus in the mornings.

Good luck by they way. It only gets easier.
