Having a major issue with iMessage activation on the Telkom network. I've been having an issue for the past two weeks, went to the Telkom store yesterday and they were not very helpful, they barely knew how to use my phone let alone know what iMessage is.

I have an open contract and I've checked that I can send international SMS's so I'm really not sure what to do. Can anyone help?

You on the latest version of iOS? Try logging out of your Apple account and sign back in. Try update carrier settings (settings>about>carrier). Maybe also try resetting your network settings (settings>general>reset> reset network settings)...

Try loading R5 airtime and trying again

There used to be a similar issue on MTN I believe. IIRC it was something with the free SMS that come with the contracts that didnt work with activating the iMessage. It was many moons ago I read about that problem, I might be wrong though.
Correct, but OP states he is able to send international smses. But, yeah, might be worthwhile to load some airtime and try again, just to be certain.

Im assuming those are still the free smses. Perhaps it is similar to those SMS promos that play on the radio where they say free smses do not qualify.

Still valid, had to do the same after restoring my phone last week.
I have free SMS’s and still loaded airtime.

I recently ported to Telkom and I can’t seem to activate iMessage and FaceTime because their FAQs says “Customers who have ported in to Telkom from another network can send international SMS's but they are not yet able to receive them”
How do I go on about this?

I'm on an open contract, I don't have the ability to load airtime.

Telkom are so useless, I'm thinking about cancelling my contract. They're so incompetent.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case! Super frustrating I'm sure!

Many of us have had this experience on other service providers. For me it was on MTN but I was able to load airtime. Took hours trying to get clarity out of MTN but they couldn't resolve the issue/didn't know the cause. The solution was found on this forum (load airtime).

The issue is well documented.... Solution not so straight forward if you unable to load airtime...

I just contacted Telkom via chat, useless, absolutely useless. I'm so annoyed.

Got hold of Telkom, gave them the link to this thread. The person who assisted me said they would escalate it to their team leader and then they ended the chat. Highly doubt I'm going to get any success in this. I just wish people we spoke to were knowledgeable.
