Immigrating to the UK

What is the cost of living in the UK?

How much do you need per month or week, per person / per child?
I have about £1200 left after bills, mortgage, council tax, virgin, Netflix etc. I save about £500 of that. The rest blow on ... whatever :). And I don’t shop at Lidl :)

My wife viewed a few flats this morning and put in an offer on a 2 bedroom, 2nd floor flat for £220k. We will need 5% deposit and £3000 agency fees. If it goes through, it will be our first property purchase outside of South Africa. She qualifies for about £250k.

I don't think I'll be selling our properties in SA. My one property is being rented out with a good tenant that's been renting from me for 5 years now with the rent covering the bond and a small profit. I just rented out my one room in the house I'm living in and if I can get another room rented out, my other bond is covered with 3 more rooms still available to rent out.

Uploaded my CV to UK job sites just now. Let's hope I get some hits!

Was a bit tricky converting an academic CV to an "industry" CV but I hope I pulled it off.

Ah right. Forgot to mention that. Convert your CV to the UK format (loads of tips online). Short, sweet and impactful is key.

It depends. We hoping to get a variable rate of between 2.5% & 3.5%
Immigrants might be hit for 3.99% because they don’t have residence history. Maybe even, 4.5%. Not many institutions will even give mortgage without at least 3 years residence status, which cuts the options somewhat.

The UK is famous for washing money. It may seem tough, but it's necessary.

Will wait and see. She is a British citizen though.

Wife received her National Insurance number yesterday in the post.

It's a bit weird having a working postal service and can't remember when I actually used SAPO.

She also applied for her first British passport and posted off her British birth certificate and SA passport using Royal Mail. She does expect to be called in for an interview as its her first British passport.

Completed the paperwork for the property purchase and expect to hear back regarding the mortgage application in a week or two.

Yeah, was a bit of a shock to me too at how efficient Royal Mail is.

The irony for me is that the only mail i get in my postbox here in South Africa is mail from UK (even if a few months late)
It's freakishly good. Applied for a new bank card online (after hours) and received it 2 working days later. PIN arrived separately on the same day.

Recall receiving mail in when I was still in SA that had been sent 6 months before...

Posted Saturday morning and should be delivered Monday morning.

Ordered 2 SIM cards and Royal Mail delivered them the next day much to our surprise as we are not used to such service. They even deliver on Saturdays.

Buy stuff online before 2 pm and it arrives the next day - seven days a week.
Many people buy all their groceries online here these days.
