I was was wondering, based on your post. What type of profits the gold mines in SA make if our gold is so expensive. Your figures say it costs $968 an ounce. I see its selling for $1731 an ounce. Seems like a tidy profit :D

Does the extraction cost per ounce include other costs as well? Such as HR costs, maintenance, rent, interest paid, taxes, depreciation etc?

If not, I'm sure they take a large chunk as well...

They take up a huge chuck indeed. Many times we focus on labour costs (unskilled, semi-skilled) but the cost of administration (HR, Geology, Survey, Mine Planning, Consultants) are huge.

E.g. A geology department can be staffed with a 1xChief Geologist, 2xSenior Geologists, 4xGeologists, 4xGeological Helpers. The salary bill for these people is around 400k per month which equates to 40 miners.
The cost per ton is generally the (Production Cost + Operating Cost).

The production cost includes Equipment, Development, Waste Stripping, Buildings, Electrical Systems, Working Capital, Engineering, Plant, Management

The Operating Cost includes Labour, Supplies & Materials, Administration and Other Sundry Items.

ok i'm just getting sick of hearing things like this from absolute neanderthals. it's time for someone to put a sock into these people's mouths. and lets start with the unions. what these people don't seem to understand is they have a packaged salary like most people do. these are just fricking morons now.

Have you heard of this place called the United Kingdom? Once upon a time their unions held them ransom but this tough woman came along and put them in their place. Now, workers are still protected and companies have to abide by strict labour safety measures and regulations, BUT, the unions cannot throw their weight around. And it is safe to say working conditions are infinitely superior to the sweat shops of China.

There is a massive difference between voicing your grievances and behaving like a fcking savage and harming the economy in the process. Unions need to be crippled in this country, but they won't.
 
Now Amplats has 15K on strike too. And Malema will apparently address soldiers in Lenasia or somewhere today.

Malema is getting really dangerous.

Not by a mile.

SA has two of the deepest gold shafts in the world; Western Deep Levels and Savuka are pushing 4 kays. Australia's deepest mines are zince and copper shafts and they haven't yet passed 2 kays. We've been exploiting Gold for over 100 years, we're having to go deeper and deeper and costs are astronomical the deeper you get. And it is getting harder to extract economically viable gold, our refining methods are also escalating costs.

The people that said he was a nothing and should be ignored were being utterly foolish. Rabble-rousers are incredibly dangerous. Hitler's rhetoric eventually caught as well. He went from ranting in front of small crowds and in beer halls to setting the world ablaze.
