He's obviously not the best man or woman for the job and in this case the DA is picking someone of colour to hopefully dispel the notion that they're a white party. I think they'e shooting themselves in the foot - they need to decide whether they pick the best for the job regardless of colour or admit that they're playing the racial game (which plays into the hands of the ANC). If they must pick on colour then convince De Lille to go for the job but it sounds from what ghoti is saying that the membership is bent on colour so Mmusi would win but not De Lille.
I dont know what leadership wants, that's you kinda adding your own narrative to this. I am making my own personal choice on the experiences I have had with Mmusi. I cant think of a white guy who is articulate and leads like Mmusi does. Athol can deliver a decent speech in three languages but his style is very different to Mmusi. DeLille is not even in the same ball park as Mmusi or Athol and has nowhere near the support to be leader of the party. No one directs us voters on how we should vote. We all vote for who personally want as our leader.
