I'm looking at importing a big shipment of Nutritional/Supplements from a distributor in the USA.

1.) Can anyone recommend a Logistics/Import company to use?
2.) What are the duties and other costs involved in importing these type of products?
3.) Time frame for delivery once ship leaves the USA?

Thanks for all your input!

Q 1.) Can anyone recommend a Logistics/Import company to use?

A 1.) You can use any international freight company.

Q 2.) What are the duties and other costs involved in importing these type of products?

A 2.) These are listed under the universal tariff code and SA's customs tarrif codes as 'foods'. A 20% duty on invoice must be paid before they are released.

Q 3.) Time frame for delivery once ship leaves the USA?

A 3.) 3 - 6 weeks over the ocean.

OTHER VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION

1. All dietary supplements for body building were reclassified as either 'health supplements' or 'complementary medicines' in SA in 2013 and 2014. They must conform to the upper limits of individual nutrients set, and be registered by the Medicines Control Council accordingly. A declaration of ingredients and amounts in each type of product must be attached to the clearance information.

2. To import the products, the products must be accompanied with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification issued by the FDA or other recognized health authority in the USA, and be endorsed by the South African Medicines Control Council.

3. Certificates of analysis of the products must be attached to the clearance documentation.

4. A registration number for the product must have been awarded by the MCC and be attached to the clearance documentation.

5. Depending on where you live, a Certificate of Premises for the Storage of Foodstuffs must also be attached to the clearance documentation.

Without all this documentation, the Port Health Authorities, SARS and Customs will not release your goods.
