In the Vodacom context the internet APN will allow you to make connections out to anything, but people cannot initiate connect from the outside to you (say to a web server running on your machine). Thus Vodacom is doing firewalling for you.

The Vodacom unrestricted APN removes the firewalling part and allows people to initiate a connection to you. So I interpret an unrestricted APN as one that allows inbound connections to you. Obviously in a NAT scenario where you get a 172.x.x.x address someone can't initiate a connection to you unless the port is specifically being forwarded.

Edit: So I defined unrestricted instead ;)

Well its strange on local gaming you get about 40ms better
but on WOW i found that latency is the same but lagspikes are less strange thing was even when i was playing at 1000ms It felt like playing at 700ms normally.

But MTN should NOT advertise for online gaming ATM...
Cause HSDPA is not ready for stable gaming experience even people on Telkom get 3 times better latencies on shaped acounts.

I saw on the MTN officail site HSDPA for gaming.....

It's working fine for me, I would suggest you get hold of the coverage guys to see what is the problem at your tower currently ;)

Maybe your rigth use to be fine lately its thru the roof.
At least with MTNVPN i get almost no spikes even with high latency.
By fine do you get a yellow bar in wow?thats 600- latency?

I average around 400 - 600 Always yellow. Got it green once O.O

I dont think MTN will come out to fix the tower if i tell them my latency is bad on WOW probably gone have to make something up :(
I used to get that too 400-600

The reception is realy good i can put my modem under a cusion and sit on it still full signal 5 bars cause tower is so close can explain then bad latency.

Thats why the usb extensions i got to put it up on the wall made no diffrence.
 
Don't think there is one. Or if there is one they won't let the cat out of the bag. As they won't make any money
 
is there an APN for VPN connection? Whats involved, etc.? Link for more info?
(sorry, not intention to hijack the thread, thought it'd fit here, rather than start nu thread)
Perhaps unrestricted APN will work for VPN (with good security on other side)?
 
MTN has a VPN APN anyone can request to have it activated.

I'm just curious as to why the OP needs an Unrestricted APN :confused: That can be done also but through MTNNS. Reason is, people need to be held accountable for their actions via an unrestricted APN. So getting it on a prepaid sim will not happen.

I might be wrong though.

MTN - IPP (Printing using SAP to remote site over 3g MTN)

Hi Guys

Does anyone know if MTN block port 80. I have a Dlink Router with dyndns setup and a MTN prepaid simcard inside. Now when I point my SAP defined printer to the DYNDNS address on port 80. It seems as though MTN are blocking this port.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Yes, MTN block all incoming ports on the 'internet' and 'MyMTN' APNs.
If you are on contract you should be able to call your service provider and ask them to activate the 'MTNVPN' APN to open incoming ports.
