I am considering using CellC on Openserve, but I have a concern about installation, which I am hoping that someone can answer for me.:p

CellC's T&Cs state:"Please note that installations on the Open Serve network are limited to 8 metres, the customer will be liable for any installation over 8 metres at a rate of R 182.40 per linear metre."

.... and I am definitely going to be on Openserve.... now 8m will take it into my garage... and based on this installation example: https://techcapetown.co.za/2015/05/1...*-telkom-ftth/ ... this will suffice until the Fibre Modem (which doesn't need a power source). Then it would require a Cat5e or preferably a Cat6 ethernet cable to my router, which would be about 15 to 20 metres away.

Now, my question is: do I pay R182.40 per metre of ethernet cable too ? .... because I do have my own cabling. But is it literally my only concern.... if anyone does know the answer to this, I would appreciate the feedback :D

Openserve terminate to a small termination box which doesn't require power but this uplinks to their ONT (which does require power) which basically is a GPON router connected via a fibre patch cable. Your router then uplinks to this device via CAT5/6.

To answer your question the distance is to the termination point of the fibre. They usually locate the ONT nearby which requires power. Where your router is located is up to you as long as the network cable is as per specification.

Hmmmm, then CellC’s 8m of their part of their paid installation isn’t very much is it.... Openserve would have to terminate in my garage and then I would have to run the Cat 6 to my router. Do Openserve charge per metre for the Cat 5/6 Cable they install to your router ?

I'm looking at 35 meters from perimeter to front door. Another 35 as the crow flies to where telkom copper enters the house. Cant go through the roof so have to follow outline of house, so installation costs for fibre will be quite expensive for me.

Some providers allow a 180m installation for the set price, so just check as this will then easily cover you. Just don’t go with CellC as it’s only 8 metres .... ;)

It's not CellC that limits you to 8m, it's Openserve and it applies to every ISP that uses them.

Makes sense ! I will simply have to run a cable myself

The 8m clause is for trenching and not for the cable, the cable is cheap and they don't give a toss about the length.

Installation will be free on FTTH if a customer sign a 24 month contract (includes
trenching of first 8 meters), if beyond 8 meters Openserve charges R 182.40 per
meter.

How does your phone line reach your house?

We don’t have a physical phone line. (Pointless nowadays anyway )

It's convenient when your existing phone line runs through a conduit into the house like mine does, they just use the old copper cable as a draw wire and your fibre is pulled through in a minute or two, chop chop :D

uh oh, had openserve trench 70m for me but they told me telkom will cover the cost, lets see what happens when the bill comes....

Well, there might be an existing telephonic pipe ;)

From what I have read some cover up to 180m .... just CellC say 8m as part of their free installation deal, but check online in the T&Cs is your deal

Thats what they did with my OpenServe installation.. Pulled my phone line out completely and jam fibre through the conduits ! Told the OpenServe guy i'm never going to use the phone line again ! Just pull it out !
