Installing Telkom FTTH through WebAfrica

Defirence680 I waited 3 weeks. Just over 3 weeks and it is in and working great. Pretoria Install. Telkom. New Fibre areawith WebAfrica.

This is in an Estate in Cape Town, there is still hope haha. I just don't want to have to lay down more money on 3G Data instead of paying for some lovely fibre. Thanks mate!

FYI, I'm on the border of your estate. Telkom phoned now and said that they are coming on Monday (which is exactly 10 weeks since application). Maybe this helps in estimating when your installation will be done.

Congrats mate, You seem to have been waiting a while. I can wait in the meanwhile, not like I'm going anywhere :P

Dammit, theres like 3 different fibre threads I'm in and I'm posting the same comments. Anyway, this is what I said in another thread:

So Telkom pitched up on time, installation was done within 1.5 hours. Took exactly 10 weeks to the day since order was placed. Then, the Telkom techie told me that they can do 2 installations per day per team, and in Cape Town, they have 4 teams.

Hi
I applied for a telkom fibre line with 200gb through web africa today,
(Plus the double your data promo taking it up to 400gb)
Although they just over a R100 more than ispAfrika
Felt that it will be easier to deal with one provider

Interesting thing is that on there site they quote
100mbps line with 200gb for R1048
Invoice received is for a 100gb

Sent email to them with no reply

Thought that R100 extra per month would
Have been justified for service levels

Anyone from webafrica can you assist

Makes sense why they take a while, also, added this info into my first post and gave you credit. Fibre etc is also expensive and not readily available. Either way it makes sense why they can't promise an exact install date.

What I don't get is that there is obviously a gap in the market to run Fibre past everyone's house, so why not just employee more contractors to clear the back log. Telkom has funny money to play with. A

nyway, I got a ping of 153ms to bbc.co.uk last night, this is the quickest ping to that site that I've ever seen. The company that I work at has super duper fibre and then the ping is only 189ms.

Guess that's just Telkom, I'd gladly do a job of just running Fibre and splicing it all day. A lot less stressful than my current job. :D

I ordered fibre through Webafrica today and was also told 4-8 weeks depending on Telkom schedule in Pretoria, will update once installed to give anyone in PTA a timeline. BTW how far will Telkom lay the fibre from the manhole to my house? Is there a limit before they will charge me?

It's 10 meters, but don't stress, I'm sure that they won't charge you if it's 13 meters.

Thanks. Unfortunately I am looking at 30-40 metres from the nearest manhole. Do you have any idea what they charge per metre after the 10?

If they need to do trenching - it's about R260 a meter. However, if they can pull the cable through existing holes, then i can't imagine it being too much or anything at all. What they did for me is use the existing telephone line, tied it to the fibre line and pulled it through. Basically a cable replacement. They didn't even measure the length of cable, just pulled it through.

Come on, imagine the poor guy who has to sit at the exchange box and connect a bunch of cables the whole day for an entire complex. Boredom of note!

Thankfully it looks like I will get away without any trenching. I asked the technicians installing the fibre to the complex and he said they will just run it along the wall to my unit. Hopefully at no charge like you say:D

Taken from the Telkom Website.
If the customer’s premise’s is in need of any entry pipes, Telkom will provide a quote for trenching at R 2,087.25 (includes first 10 linear meters. Additional trenching will be at a cost of R208.73). A Telkom approved contractor is available to complete the work; alternatively the customer may make use of his own contractor to do the work

Hi WA "Helper"
I was not able to get a 100mbps fibre connection through you guys as you informed me that my area only supports upto 10mbps (Plattekloof, WC). Well in stepped VOX who rubbished that claim and have installed and I am up and running with my 100mbps line.
In the interim I have noticed that WA prices have become quite attractive so I sent a sales request asking that since I already have a working 100mbps fibre connection, would WA be able to offer me account. I wanted to know if the lower price was due to throttling or shaping or whether I would have a similar situation to VOX.
After 2 days of no response from WA, I received a support email saying that you havent heard back from me in 48 hours and could the ticket considered resolved?
Quality customer service. So I responded asking WTF? and asked someone to actually READ my ticket.
this morning's response: "we have not heard back from you in 48 hours, can we consider the issue resolved?

I would like to say that this is the first instance of WA dropping the ball in my history with them but it seems to be a common thing.

Are you able to help me or not? last chance!

Does anyone know who long the pre-order takes?

Openserve are busy finishing installing our fibre and I've pre-ordered through Webafrica.

I am with webafrica. And I am not going to lie there service is super crappy. It takes more than a week to get back to you even if you are there customer. Once they get back to you the agents are very helpful I might add. But I guess they only have 5 agents and that is why it takes so long.

Lucky you. They haven't got back to me at all haha

I'll give it until the 10 week mark since they say it takes 4-10 weeks for OpenServe fibre to be installed. After that I'll try my luck with Axxess.
