A black hole in the universe - JHB
Do they use Seacom at all and if so what for ?
I thought they were mainly a satellite back end service?
Trying to figure out why certain people on Bad Company 2 have lag and others dont
Seems that anything based in IS backbone is lagging

Thanks

They are bloody useless, at least MWEB is perfect
Depends on what you use it for. Mweb is far from perfect for many protocols - have a look at all the complaints in the feedback thread. Openweb Gold is as close to perfect as an uncapped package gets in this country.

No satellite involved.

BFBC2 is entirely local, so undersea cable does not matter. The only thing that goes overseas is the auth and stats data....which doesn't affect latency.

The effect you are describing is likely to be a combination of:

You can easily see 30ms difference between exchanges. The latency display in game in BFBC2 is also 2x what you are used to. I think its because they calculate it as round-trip...might be wrong about that. It also uses am above average % of the line, so 384k get a slight latency penalty.

Another contributing factor is the IPC breakout. Most servers are in jhb, so ideally you want to use something other than WA/Cybersmart. IS should be fine...unless you're on the WAGE servers & you're near CPT, then the IPC is the wrong way around again.

Can't recall whether port forwarding makes a difference. In some games it does.

I find that the best results are to be had with Afrihost b/w & playing on the iGame servers. (Assuming you're in GP area)

Mweb has the disadvantage of the peering issue w/ SAIX ppl.

Wrong on both counts. I left MWEB and now on Opengold IS backbone and it's MUCH better.

IS have different products. If you buy a cheap product you will get cheap service. That's just the way it is.

so far i know ain't the IS data centre in jhb?

so if you are sitting in cpt and play on wage server, your data goes to jhb and then to cpt?

same way if you use webafrica and you play on a jhb server?

jip, My free afrihost account that I use for gaming BO gives a higher ping to CPT than to JHB, I am in CPT

In short if you're on WebAfrica or Cybersmart cap then everything always goes to CPT regardless of where you are or what server you're connecting to. So depending on where you are and the server is this is either good or bad.

All the other ISPs its the other way round. Everything goes to JHB with them.

AFAIK webafrica have a presence at JINX now too. MWEB splits their network into two. JHB-DBN people go to JINX and CPT people go to CINX.
