Internet Solutions ADSL network down

Firstly, there are currently no Tier 4 datacentres in South Africa. Tier 4 requires independent power supplies from two or more different providers. Eskom and Eskom and Eskom and a million spinning classes inVirgin Active gyms around the country doth not a dual supplier make.

Secondly.. oh my gawwwd...Neotel Broadband isn't down.. only everyone else.:wtf::p:p

Don't blame Eskom because you haven't read the standard that defines datacentre tiers. It is possible to have a Tier 4 DC in SA.

UPS / DC

Not sure how relevant it is these days with compact genies and intelligent UPSs & STSs (source transfer switches), but the practice of designing/using DC power for carrier equip still persists.

Modern UPS uses DC from the storage battery and then converts that to AC to run the PC equipment ?

How does a direct DC UPS work ?

Better to be answered by an eletrician/engineer, but my understanding is, there is no UPS.

The DC feed from the rectifier and the battery bank are wired in parallel, so if AC fails, current just continues to be supplied by the batteries. There is no concept of a cutover.

Some more info.....

Telkom says: "It was identified that the second module on the on-site rectifier had blown, which in turn tripped the main rectifier breaker, resulting in a total loss of power to the Internet Solutions node, with respect to Telkom SA infrastructure. Both Transmission technicians as well as DC Power techs were dispatched to site to verify and ensure that the power had been correctly restored. At the same time, the faulty module was replaced and the system remained up and operational."

Sometimes even backups or redundant supplies fail.... Sometimes even at the same time unfortunately...

Time for a redundant Telkom node perhaps...
