Hi all - sorry if this has been asked 1000x, but the more I read, the more confused I get...

I'm keen to get the following:
http://www.takealot.com/mecer-2400va-1440w-inverter-battery-charger-ups/PLID34200263 (1440W inverter/charger)
http://www.bushpower.co.za/products.asp?pid=657 (100ah, 12V Lead-acid deep-cycle)

to run:
Samsung P60F5500 Plasma (est 97W)
HP Microserver with 4x HDD, 1x DVD drive, HD6450 grahics card (est 60W)
HD PVR (est 34W)
Wifi ADSL Router (est 10W)
Wifi Router (est 10W)

By my dubious calculations, that combo above should be happy for around 3hrs? Have I not considered anything important? P.S. I'm a little price sensitive, so haven't looked at AGM/Dry Cell batteries.

Thanks
James

Total given = 211W. = 260VA (assuming PF of 0.8)
100Ah @ 12V = 1200 VAh x 0.90 inverter efficiency = 1080 VAh x 50% 'used of battery' = 540 Vah
Looks more likely that you'll get 2 hours to me...; but given that your router probably uses more like 1W rather than 10W and same with the others (those are likely peak loads), you'll probably be going on for 3-4 hours...

FYI - http://www.outdoorwarehouse.co.za/enertec-m27mf-deep-cycle-battery.html - says that battery only has 360 cycles at 50% discharge. So assuming ONE load-shed every day that battery would only last 1 year -- and remember at the end of that year, it's capacity will have also fallen considerably (so you'll be going closer to 50% each time too -- it's a bit of a vicious cycle).

Limiting factor will be the CHARGER in the UPS you specc-ed (link doesn't work for me). How long will it take to charge 100Ah of battery and is it compatible with the battery you've picked... basically check the chemistry of them both = probably both lead-acid.

That's a hell of a lot of money for a battery that can only do 360 cycles @ 50% DOD.....
Must be a mistake :wtf:

My Samsung plasma is the same size and uses 450w. I doubt you're is only 97w? Did you measure?

Rather go for ritar batteries at mantech. R2K ea with a rating of 1000 cycles at 30% DOD.

Phone them and speak to Rani. Its cheaper to order direct than buy online.

thanks for the link man. i guess my rct 2000va is probably not the correct charger for the agm battery. what is my options in buying a 10amp gel/agm lead acid battery. where can i find one very cheap.

does the rct 2000va take lead calcium batteries? i guess this would be a cheaper option since i don't use it that often and i only need it for a load of 350w-400w max for 2h30m.

gonna sell my lead calcium batteries soon.

Its sealed lead acid, your charger is fine.

Why are you even considering 10Ah? You need proper juice for start up esp.

I can get x2 2nd hand agm 100ah batteries for 2k. Is it worth it, or should I just buy new .

You never know how many times second hand bateries have been cycled
Remember 100ah battery about r150-200 worth in scrap if you buy a new battery even if it totally dead

Ok, so you saying i can buy those gel/agm sealed lead acid batteries?
Yes you can.

PVR 2 uses 40w only.

Read my post in the solar thread about how little power your house uses when excluding geyser etc. I average 500w with everything, but mainly because all my lights are LED.

my set up allows total house usage for 4 to 5 hours with a 2.4kva UPS and two 100Ah batteries in series.

Batteries are very important for performance. Don't underestimate them.

What is pvr if I may ask?
