iOS 16 Features by Model

The download and installation progress bars are quite useless. Apple should really just remove them.

I looked into this a long time ago (on the Windows side of the world) and accurate installation progress bars are one of the most difficult things to code.

Here's a good explanation of why.

From the article above:

"You cannot accurately determine something that is nondeterministic.

Ultimately, the progress bar inaccuracy boils down to the fact that it is trying to determine a time for something that is nondeterministic.

Because computers process tasks both on demand and in the background, it is almost impossible to know what system resources will be available at any point in the future – and it is the availability of system resources which is needed for any task to complete."

They are however a useful visual indicator that something is happening and that the process hasn't hung.

I don't recall seeing these before?

There were two or three tests of these during the 16.5 betas, I seem to remember people having issues with them then as well.

It’s not made clear at all but the update is ramping up, ie. becomes available over time. I was able to install mine now. Was pretty quick as well.

Downloading wasn't the issue for me, that went pretty quick. Then it got stuck.

I was able to complete the installation earlier which itself took less than a minute.
