Thought we could discuss iOS 4.0 GM for the iPhone - related stuff here:

Ok so I just updated my 3.1.2 3GS to 4.0 GM custom firmware which i made i.e. jailbroken and this thing is solid!

- Much nicer feel to the OS. Sliding from page to page on the homescreen is not so "light" anymore, feels much more solid.
- Entering and exiting apps has a much nicer transition/fade to/from homescreen
- Categories - done VERY nicely!
- Multitasking - awesome!
- EDIT: Cydia upgrade essential just appeared, maybe that's less buggy. - Cydia is still buggy as its from a RedSnow beta, but im sure it will be updated soon
- Zoom for camera!
- Sort photo/vid library by type (photo/video)

I'm sure there are a lot of Cydia app incompatibilities with 4.0 so i'm gonna try and stay away from the usual stuff until the apps are updated for 4.0!

If you guys need help installing the iOS 4.0 GM Seed then ask here!

Some notes:
- You do NOT need your UDID on a developer account to install the iOS 4.0 GM firmware.
- At the moment, you can only restore/update to iOS4.0 GM firmware using iTunes 9.2 Beta (which is only out for Mac OSX at the moment)
- If you are manually SSH'ing photos/vids back into the DCIM folder, the thumbnails need to go into a different folder now, located at var/mobile/Media/PhotoData .. But they still not showing up in library for me atm :/

Updated my 3G to iOS4 last night - quite impressed with it :) I soooooo can't wait to get my shiny new iPhone 4 now :) Hoping we get them by August (seeing that's when my upgrade is due...)

Oh yes, no wallpaper for the home screen on the 3G though :( At least I got folders, unified inbox etc :)

Sorry is this is a retarded question but is OS 4 available to download yet? Officially?

THanks, this is a silly move though, hope they enable wallpapers in the end for 3G

This sucks - thats what I was hoping to get in iOS4 - might as well go get a 3GS then this weekend- can't wait that long for iPhone 4.
Damn..

So hows everyone liking iOS 4.0?

Notice the geo-tagging of photos? Very neat!

And the spell check? Don't use it but a pretty cool feature! Overall it's much nippier than OS3.2 that i was on! Very happy!

When you did the upgrade did you perform the usual restore at the end to get all your settings and programs back on?

No as I forgot to back up on the iTunes 9.2 beta and backed up in the official release version of iTunes which doesn't support 4.0 yet.

Luckily I did a manual backup just in case

Yip, loving it :) I've noticed that if I've received multiple push notifications (from different apps), as soon as i dismiss the one now the next one pops up - not perfect but definitely a step in the right direction.

So iTunes 9.2 is out for Windows now guys!

You can all update to 4.0 GM now! Just grab a copy of the firmware for your device (3G/3GS) and shift-restore (or alt-restore for mac) to the firmware. Voila.

Stay away if you are not factory unlocked though! (although i think it maintains the baseband as mine was not upgraded from 5.11.07 so unlock SHOULD remain)

And just a warning, most Cydia apps are incompatible / have stability issues with 4.0 GM! But it's worth it while you wait for them to update :)

Just upgraded to iOS4 on Windows with 3GS and all I can say is WOW WOW WOW!! Now I cant wait to get my iPhone 4. Three weeks....hmmm, 720p video:) Shibby

Three weeks? Where you getting your iPhone 4 from? I'm gonna have t wait till they launch in SA...

Just upgraded my 3G. looks nice. Like the new glass effect dock. Noticed that they finally have a character count option for SMS.

Here is a list of Cons (IMO) on my 3GS
The Folders are cool, but only allows 12 items per folder. I need to create a ex. Games 1 and Games 2 folder for 13 games...
No Multitasking as of yet because the actual Application/Game has to support the feature - RETARDED! (read it somewhere on the web to confirm)
The camera Zoom is cool, but it's a digital zoom, so you lose a LOT of quality on full zoom. Might as well take a normal picture and zoom in on the pc.
A lot of Cydia apps still not supported yet.

Otherwise I'm really enjoying the look and feel of iOS4.
