Can't say if the tab will or won't be getting ics; the only definite device atm to get ics is nexus. That's my argument, there neesd to better co-ordination around software launches ie make sure that all devices with adequate hardware get ics at the same time. Imagine if Microsoft or Linux released their new desktop os to only a single model of Samsung laptop -- yes it doesn't make any sense!

That is never going to happen, at the same time I mean. Google might be able to put in a clause that will force the vendors to update all the old hardware first before the new hardware with a newer operating system is older than a month or so, but I don't think that will happen either. I think they will be forcing the vendors to certain hardware specs soon to be able to release a phone with a certain operating system to ensure that it is upgradable in the future.

My 2 cents

I've wanted a tablet for ages - a Samsung Galaxy actually - but every month something crops up and I've never been able to buy one :(

Now FNB have launched a tablet for R200pm (iPad 2 16GB + 3G) which - although it's an Apple - I may over look some of the lacking features and get instead. As someone that hasn't used an iPad, I have a few questions :

Lack of Flash - I've heard different stories. Some users are happy because it blocks Flash adverts. Adobe says you're missing 70% of the net - yet Steve Jobs says this :

What they don’t say is that almost all this video is also available in a more modern format, H.264, and viewable on iPhones, iPods and iPads. YouTube, with an estimated 40% of the web’s video, shines in an app bundled on all Apple mobile devices, with the iPad offering perhaps the best YouTube discovery and viewing experience ever.

So if Apple decide to make an app - it works (ie Youtube) but if they don't (ie smaller video streaming sites) - can you still view? What about this H.264 Steve is talking about? What does www.nandos.co.za do?

Secondly - if I chose not to lie about my location and select SA, I understand it cuts out many features and apps to get. What features and apps do I lose?

Do you need iTunes to run it? So if I get home and want to load a few photo's, do I need to import to iTunes first - then sync? Or will it appear as another drive when inserted to the PC?

Firstly, the nandos website loaded fine on my mac device.
Secondly, Apple sells very high quality products. I've got the Macbook Pro, iPhone 4 and will be getting a iPad. I have a Android tablet and cannot stand the thing. I am constantly trying to get simple things to work on my well-known Android device which annoys me. I am either going to sell it or throw it against the wall.

You need iTunes for basic things like loading music, Podcasts etc but now with iCloud you can set it up and never have to think about it again (mac or pc). Personally I like iTunes so I do use it to look at and download apps etc. Again, I couldn't stand the Android market. The problem for me is just because the app works on a lot of devices it might not work on yours because of the amount of different Android versions and hacks etc whereas Apple knows what will work on all your devices so I find I can come across apps a lot faster than having to download 10 just to see which one I like and which one works. (Very annoying for when you've paid for an app and it doesn't work in the Android market place)
The iTunes store has a lot of great apps for right here in SA. I did create a US account because they have a lot more free apps and a lot more podcasts. It's a simple process to setup and I don't feel bad about it because they're free apps anyways.

My feeling is to go to a look and listen or Vodacom or whatever and play around with all the device before you order it. The Cresta Look and Listen has iPads you can play with and see if you like it. Get them to show you the browsing and App store etc. Or even better go to an iStore and chat to a Genius. They'll show you what you can or can't do and Apple gives you training on your new products if you need help transitioning.

(By the way this isn't my first post on the forum. My account was hacked so I had to create another one. Just in case Trolls decide to get all emo at my pro-Apple approach)

I think the thread has been misunderstood :/

I love my car, my LCD, my camera and pretty much every other gadget I own. However - for every one of the gadgets I own, I can can identify flaws or something that would make it better the next version. The iPad is no different - great device (I have two now!) and I've pretty much used it non-stop since I got it. But there are errors which I wanted to point out.

Whether they effect all people or some people, or if there are complex or easy work around, is up to what they person is doing. Most of you are happy and I've been wrong on a few points before I got the iPad - but we're all different.

I think every issue has been covered in this thread, so I'm not going to mention again.

Yeah tablets do still have a few limitations. Obviously within about 3 generations or so they will be a lot more capable. Companies often limit the "completeness" of a product to provide an incentive to upgrade to the next version.

Still holding thumbs for a retina display. I love the clear text on the iPhones/ipod touch display.

Hmm, what i dislike about my ipad?

The 20mb app thing. That i cant load pdfs to my pad directly yet. Thats about it so far.

Photon flash web browser handles all your flash browsing requirements. $3.99 though through AppStore.

Must I agree with Dolby completely now, found his threads a tad arrogant in the beginning but at the of the day these threads offer you some of the best buyers guidance. If you want to know why you will love a product, go to their website but for most of us that isnt enough. Popping into a few forums puts it all in perspective.

I'll still defend my apple devices no matter what as most of the issues don't affect me, but that's me. Someone else may want to use it for all the wrong reasons and end up hating it, but you won't know till you have used it on a day to day basis.

If you still doubt the iPad, read all of Dolby's posts ofer the last month, he went from almost canceling his order using it none stop since getting it. That's apple, the hype will never make sense till you own one(well in my experience phones and tablets, dunno about macs just yet)

Ps Dolby, told ya!!

And now adobe has abandoned flash for mobile devices, no surprise since it's a resource hog. So the iPad is now even more future proof.

Haha heard a fanboy pointing out all the technologies apple has dropped over the years and this is yet another example. Most of those technologies are no longer used today...

Lol you own 2 now? Can't be all that bad then eh?

Whoa now... I know it's not perfect, hence we have a thread called "iPad 2 disadvantages"; and I'm sure it won't be the last...

Dolby's transformation into a Apple fanboi prostrated in front of the Jobs Altar is almost complete.

/evil grin

Oh please ;)

The difference between myself and a fanboi is that I see flaws / limitations with the device. I'm neither blinded nor brainwashed!

That story made me laugh out loud and I had to wipe the tears from my cheeks. Kinda ends all the Flash arguments right there.

Now, now, play nice with the Apple newbies... 'tho, to be fair, every time I chat to someone who has been converted I have a line from Stephen King's "It" roll around I'm my head. Goes a little something like" "We all float down here."

No it doesn't ...

Apple decided 4 years back it was old. Adobe stop it now and you'll find it many, many years before it's truly dead. That's almost a decade of 10's of millions of iSheep having no access to Flash which is a huge part of the web.

I'm a realist not an Applist .... I'll never be one of 'you' ;)

Do you mean download? I was looking for a manual yesterday (pdf) and figured how to download directly to ipad. Open the page in Safari and there is an option to then open in Dropbox. Form there you can upload into the specific Dropbox folder you want. Or you can download directly from Goodreader.

Oh please ;)

Denial, the last step in the conversion process...only kidding [-]Apple[/-]Dolby.:D Of course the devices have flaws and limitations.

Okay, okay, you might be an exception... For most 'tho, the process has always gone a little something like: Get an iPod, like it a lot, so maybe get an iPhone 'cos of how much we like the iPod. Like the iPhone a lot so start looking at an iPad or Mac... Blink and ever bit of tech has a shiny silver Apple on it. Purr like a kitten.
