iPad Air is the iPad 5

A refresh (and a name change) to Apple’s popular line of 9.7-inch iPad tablet PC products has been announced

Why is the iPad 2 still available but not the following two?

I'm with you here. Why they couldn't have made ipad4 the $400 model along with retina Mini is beyond me. I can understand raising cost on Mini because it can't be much cheaper to make than a full size iPad but leaving the 2 at $400 is weird,

Good question, maybe because iPad 2 is really the only iPad that is very different (performance) from the 3 and 4? Even more confusing is the price, $400?! Seems like they're pulling a 5S and 5C here, trying to push people to the higher priced model.

Should have called them the iPad S and iPad C :D

Smaller bezel? Why?!

Edit: But I must say that the weight and thinness are impressive.

Why ? because you get more screen area for a given smaller entire form factor. Large bezels are a waste of space. On my iPad mini (with really narrow bezels) I find it way better than using my iPad 2 with the wiiiiddde bezel. After using a narrow bezel, as on the iPad mini, the large bezel seems stone age.

It needs to get thinner because soon the new Haswell i3 will be out and it doesn't need a fan which will mean thinner Windows 8 tablets

I think the 2 as mentioned is like an entry level cheaper option that does still work, albeit is more sluggish and a few missing or has lower performing features. With three iPad 2's and one iPad 4 in my family, our main difference is noticing the 2's are slower at various apps and take crappier pics. Otherwise the 2's do all the 4 does, and is probably cheaper to make, thus makes a good option for entry level.

The iPad 2 was the last non-Retina iPad, which is a lot cheaper to produce. I think Apple are scared to lower the price too much because at $299 it would canabalise the new model sales.

After watching the conference last night I'm seriously considering getting myself the iPad air... And I'm not an Apple fan.

Do you think they are keeping old school wireless and the old screen for nostalgic purposes?

Time to increase that storage to a base of at least 64GB - thought this was the future!

The only one then.

And that is more of a PC than the average tablet.
The Haswell i3 will make for slimmer windows and maybe Linux tablets that are on par with your average tablet in terms of size and battery life

What old screen? The retina iPad or the iPad2? I think the standards they've set now will be there for a while. They don't feel pushed to update the res on the iPad because nobody's really asking for it and it's a diminishing return; and they'd be forcing devs to refit all those 475000 tablet apps they boasted about. Maybe the next res bump will happen in a few years and it'll be a big jump - like 4k or something. But I don't expect or even wish for a better res.

As for iPad2 I'm as baffled as anyone on this. Grody old fashioned chargers are going to be around for a while longer I guess.
