iPad Air is the iPad 5

Have to say I'm impressed they managed to get a retina display in the mini so quickly. I didn't think it would be here so soon.
 
Time to increase that storage to a base of at least 64GB - thought this was the future!

iPad 2 was probably sold to a big government contract that requires it to be available for a couple of years, including parts. It's the only device that still has the old 30 pin sync as well.

They're not quite up till last years Nexus - are they?

I just thought that at least we'd have a higher resolution screen - but you're in saying no one is actually asking for them or need them. Is this the same screen as on iPad 3 and 4?

What is the point of a screen with a resolution greater than the current retina screen? You do realise that retina means that the human eye is unable to see the pixels at a normal viewing distance, right? :confused:
 
I would love to get an iPad Air, but the closed environment is still a major negative.

May wait to see what the new Asus tablet is like.

So Apple got it 100% again - 9.7" and 2048 x 1536 - how do they do it?!
What will you say when the next generation does have a higher resolution screen?
 
With my FNB contract for iPad 2 coming to an end, I'll wait to see an offer on this from FNB.

But from what I've read, that's pointless - because Apple have said categorically that * 9.7" and ** 2048 x 1536 are the best for tablets

* they've since gone back on this claim
** we're waiting for them to go back on this claim too

They never claimed that 2048 was the perfect resolution. They chose a number that worked mathematically at a retina level, and unless there's really a noticeable difference from the competition it's pointless to change. - all the reviews I can see say that the 2560 tablets aren't really a big difference from 2048. The main factor is optimising the apps to work at a certain resolution takes a lot of developer effort. They have to rescale all their assets. So they wouldn't go through that kind of overhead if it wasn't necessary.

But by all means if that additional 500px makes a difference, you know Samsung's got your back. I'll take free iLife suite and lightest, fastest retina grade tablet on the market tx.

They could have bumped it up a bit but that would have meant hurting gaming performance, battery life, and existing apps. It might make sense when 4K panels are low power and the GPU is fast enough, but until then the current resolution is optimal.
 
The iPad Air branding tells me there is an iPad Pro on the way running a touch screen version of OSX.

Nope.

Bringing out a tablet friendly version of OSX ... ie. to bring iOS and OSX closer ... need not be the confusing mess Windows 8 is. Trust Apple to do it better. It has to happen at some point but it can be done smarter. Example: Three clearly differentiated OSs ... iOS for iPad Air and Mini, OSX Touch for iPad Pro, and OSX for non touch-screen Macs. A touch friendly OSX must come.
