iPad Mini 7.9-inch Apple tablet PC unveiled

Ja, it's all about the money. At least it seemed like Steve Jobs didn't go after the money, but was tryig to create a niche market and stay in certain parameters.
All lost on the board of Directors now.

Yes, but they still have to show the shareholders that they can do well without Steve Jobs.

At this point Apple had to go the 7" route, whether it makes financial/market share sense I don't know, but the market dictates so,sorry Steve Jobs.As for the price I think fail on Apples's part.

ok, let me rephrase. I don't want to get into an apple vs. android debate. If the nexus, kindle fire HD or any other tablet for that matter, are better or not is not what my central point was. If that came across as such I apologise.
I just don't agree with these incremental upgrade schedules when it comes to hardware and the "buying for the sake of buying" mentality when it comes to gadgets.
What makes the ipad 4 compared to the ipad 3 so much better that it justifies a purchase? Sure one can argue that it has a new processor and an updated connector, but do they really make such a big difference? Will the Ipad 3 suddenly become an outdated dinosaur that is so sluggish in comparison that nothing will work on it any more and justify a $500+ upgrade after just 6 months? I personally don't think so, however I am probably in the minority with these views given that millions bought an iphone 5 although they owned the 4s.

I would still be perfectly happy now if I owned an Ipad 2 or an Iphone 4/4s and would probably keep then for a few years rather than just a few months until the new version comes out and off to the dump with the "old" device.
Those are just my views on this matter :P

I own the iPad 3 and yes it's a small 6 month update.
Naturally in hindsight I wish I had waited but it isn't a big deal

The upgrade is small and I suspect they have done this for 1 or 2 reasons
- maybe the are moving their iPad refresh to October each year in which case this will be one of few upgrades
- maybe they just needed to change the lte to be more international like the iPhone 5

You're probably not aware of this but Jobs is no longer in a position to run apple seeing as he died a little over a year ago.

It has very little to do with Jobs. Sure, the underlying comment seems to be an attack on Jobs to highlight that either Apple today is wrong about 7" or Jobs was wrong about 7" back then. People love to point out mistakes of successful people/companies (it makes them feel better).

Regardless, the sudden change in Apples stance to 7" tablet shows they are feeling the strain from the competitors and are following suit on the 7" tablets. This mini tablet is actually really a bad thing from the Apple perspective. It's showing that Apple is no long leading the pack, but is suddenly needing to play catchup on the tablet wars.

I dont like the fact that none of these new devices (including the androids) come with a usb port - I want a usb port!

What you talking about?

All Asus Eee tabs have USB Host adapters, actually they have 2 on the keyboard docs or if you buy just the tablet there is a USB host adapter

I know cause I normally plug in an External mouse and my 1 TB USB drive when my Eee Pad is used on a desk.

+ 1, my sentiments exactly/

Hardly, they're just responding to customer's wants. Apple has never been one for leaving money on the table.

The fourth gen ipad makes sense to me - Apple needed to a) address the LTE issue and b) introduce the lightning adapter to the range - why not give the cpu and graphics a boost at the same time? IMO if the third gen iPad was known as the iPad3 then this is a iPad3s and there's nothing wrong with that.

Its a parallel to the competitors putting some pressure on Apple. Apple was previously of the stance 7" tablets are a no go area (Remember, apple thought 7" where "DOA" and not worth while) apple wants a piece of that pie.

Sure, it's giving the consumers what they want, but it was competitors that saw the potential first - putting the pressure on apple to release a 7" version and play catchup.

Personally, I think 7" tablets are the way to go, 10"+ is just too big for a hand held device.

The comparison you made was to the 16gb nexus for $199
In your comparison you mentioned only the specs in which you perceived the nexus was better.
The areas where the iPad is better were ignored.
Objectivity?

Not sure whose post you are referring to, I only mentioned that the Nexus 7 16GB was USD249, but that it is no longer available and has been replaced by the 32GB model for the same price.

And yes, the Nexus 7 has major omissions, the most important one being the lack of a microSDXC slot.

And I only compared the iPad Mini to the SGT 7.7" P6800, which is much older than the iPad Mini, and has a better display.

But the P6800 is slower, and does not have LTE, although it does have fast 3G.

It is better than the iPad Mini in most respects, and also has a microSDXC slot which takes 64GB microSDXC cards.

Not sure whether Samsung will update this model, they should as it would be a head on competitor to the iPad Mini. It just needs a faster cpu and Jelly Bean (maybe also LTE?) to blow the iPad Mini out of the water, as the display is already much better than that of the iPad Mini.

I agree, IMO they rushed it out in order to try and capture a piece of all the action in that market segment.

Edit : Apple are well aware that if someone buys a Nexus 7 or Fire HD that they will never buy an Apple device, especially in view of the Nexus 10 and 10" Fire that will be out soon. They had to do damage control.

Well, actually the numbers show there is lots of migration from Android products to iOS products, and very little the other way round.
So not sure where you came up with " Apple are well aware that if someone buys a Nexus 7 or Fire HD that they will never buy an Apple device"

Proof please. My Google search turned up the exact opposite.

Another critical issue for a 7" tablet, IMO, is that it should have GPS, because people will use it to travel.

The Samsung 7" (AFAIK) and Nexus 7 have GPS in the wifi models, but the wifi iPad Mini does not.

My GF came short like this, did not realise that the iPad 3 wifi does not have GPS.

So, for all buyers out there, note that the iPad Mini wifi model DOES NOT HAVE GPS !

Edit : I also have an iPod Touch 32GB 4th Gen wifi that is useless for the same reason.

My apologies.
I had responded to someone and you repsonded to my response and I erroneously assumed you were the original poster

This is what I was responding to
+1 how do they want to justify this $130 premium, if people can get imo a better tablet with better resolution for $199?
And this ipad 4 coming out after just 6 months, it seems planned and perceived obsolescence is their core business strategy with only the bottom line in mind and not the customers
