My iPad 1 is over a year old and still running everything.
I imported an iPad 2 at the beginning of the year but sold it (at a profit) mostly because of the lack of Jailbreak back then. So I guess it will totally depend on you, if you want to pay the extra $$$ for a better looking device thats a bit snappier.
In my case it was not as I dont spend so much time on it.

Also what should I beware of when buying a second hand ipad from reliable source in other words someone I know for years and who whon't dissapear? Should I ask for anything to pair it to my itunes account or is all just ok?
