With the M* series Macs perhaps because of the 10x performance improvement vs Intel but for most other things it doesn't matter. New tech comes out all the time. The most painful thing is buying an Apple device a couple of weeks short of new version coming out. My reason is simple it’s not because I would rather have the newest one but is because historically Apple would drop the old ones prices and maintain the flagship price point for the newest model. It happened to me once and though I had no choice it was very annoying. If you want to still be on the older model if you can wait till the new one comes out and get the best price deal. Personally I don’t upgrade every year but anytime I upgrade anything- even home appliances I get the most recent model for future proofing. My partner prefers to wait and get the immediate past model for saving. To each their own.
