I'm just hoping the new iPhone can actually forward SMS's. I have the old iPhone 8GB and it's sitting in my draw because my HTC Tytn is a better device.

To me it looks like confirmation the phone is Vodacom's bailiwick.

i think the iphone is out on the 29th in the US...
either way, i cant imagine vodacom selling the iphone for anything less than R4500 prepaid...
the $199 refers to the additional amount you pay after taking up a new contract, same as the $399 that Jobs mentioned.

It's being released in the US on the 11th of July. No country is getting it before then.

O2 in the UK is giving it away for free on certain tariffs.

Just rewatched Jobs' key note address... he says the iPhone will be sold at that price is ALMOST every country in the world. Hopefully Vodacom won't be one of those 'almost's

No, that iPhone is discontinued, Iphone 2 is going to be dumped in every country, Apple wants to dominate the world with it's new iPhone 3G!

According to what I read you have to take out a contract. So far nothing said about MTN just Vodafone.

They probably going to give you a free iPhone on a Talk1000 or something like that.

And we are only receiving it later this year. Not the 11 July. Later this year could be beginning next year.

no, in america you pay $399 for the phone(old) on contract...it is like a pay in...you cant buy the phone for $399 by itself, you would pay $399 plus the monthly contract fee...so it is pretty expensive. it would work more or less the same here. the $199 would be a contract pay in price. If you were to buy the phone by itself, it would be more like 8k-10k...

As I said in the other thread that is exactly what you currently do in the US - you buy your phone outright for $399 - there is no subsidy.

Exactly, because it will be locked and useless and only activated with a contract bought through iTunes or in-store.

sorry, i misunderstood you, i know what you are saying but when i said that i meant that they lock you into a contract...you buy the phone, and pay contract fees...i recently read that t-mobile sells the phone for free on (what they call a) talk 1000 pakage(cpold be wrong though)...i am confused know, do you think we will be able to buy the phone for 1500 with no contract lock in?on vodacom?

the iphone should be available on prepaid... but not for R1500. you're most likely going to have to fork out over R5000 for it.

on AT&T you get the iphone on a 2 year contract, you pay the monthly charge for the contract as well as the $399 up front to get the iphone.
now its $199, not $399 but you'll still need a contract to get it at that price.
with good old vodascum we'll most probably need a huge contract and still pay the equivalent of $199 as the once off fee... would be interesting if they do bring out special contracts though...

You never needed a contract to buy it from an Apple store. You bought the phone and then activated it (or not) at your leisure - is that going to change?
