iPhone 3G hype grows

When it was launched Steve Jobs said the iPhone would sell globally for $199. That was in his live address.

I also read that Apple is being really heavy handed with resellers, and that they are totally dictating the price.

So if it is offered for anything above R2,500.00 it's just not cool. But then again when it comes to apple product distribution there are a lot of things that are just not cool (not so subtle dig at Core)

Yes, but that is with a 24 month contract. Pre-paid will cost much more.

I am chatting to Apple and Vodacom in the next podcast...let's hope they have some news! They have an NDA over their heads so everything til now has been unofficial, which means we may only get the iPhone for Christmas.

Or better yet they'll wait until the next big school holiday and tie that in with a new Tom Cruise movie where he uses the iPhone 3G to detonate a bomb under Santa's sled parked outside the White house saving mand kind from nuclear war.......... so yeah Christmas.

I spoke to an MTN outlet in Lonehill, The guy there said that MTN will be selling the iPhone 3g come end of July. Can anyone confirm this? I initially thought it was only Vodacom? He didn't even flinch.

n82 - Joke!

y I cannot argue with the fact that the iPhone is a capable mobile.

Just remember one thing - while everyone is drooling and dreaming over the iPhone - a lot of people are USING (physically touching) phones that are way more advance (like the N82).
.

The iPhone is far superior to any Nokia available. I am using a Nokia N95 8Gb, and it is utter utter trash. Don't get me wrong, the build is very solid, but: Its operating system is light years behind the iPhone. The new apps coming out from the iPhone, blows the Nokia further out of its league. Symbian programs look like a complete joke compared to their iphone rivals.
Every time a new Nokia phone comes out I get more dissapointed, they used to be ontop, now they just make silly, un-nesicarily complicated users interfaces.

The second iPhone comes out, I am ditching my Nokia like a brick (which it is).

Yea. So um.
If the iPhone 3G is coming out end of July (Which is pretty much now, right?)
when are they actually gonna release pricing?

Maybe once you have bought it, its a surprise to see how much your bank balance decreases? :D

So there is a great opportunity for Vodacom to shake up the market a bit. They could revolutionise the industry with the iPhone, imagine everyone has one!

Yes just like telkom had the chance....

SA companies are Leeches and they WILL drain the last cent from you.... :(

Well i hope all you suckers buy this phone at great expense, forcing them to drop the price on the HTCs/Nokias [putting them on awesome specials] . Then i'll get me a REAL phone.

<sarcasm>come on guys, we are being totally unreasonable expecting vodacom to provide us with info as to what they are disgusting[1] about the iphone3G pricing and release date here...</>

Don't steal my pun! you thief!

i am quite disappointed in the lack of hype in SA. besides one manky web registration form, i've seen nothing from vodacom regarding a launch date or anything to get excited about. what about a countdown? i know this phone isn't everything to everyone, but i'm still quite excited about it's launch on the SA network.

i think there'd be more effort if there were 2 operators launching the iPhone.

sigh.

Yea man.
Good point. I'm excited for it to come. Even though, its gonna be ridiculously overpriced by Vodacom, and I wont be able to afford it. But I've been watchin the Engadget stuff, and have been excited for the American Launch...

I definately think Vodacom is missing out here. They should create hype. It will be better for them, as more people know about it, ie: more people can buy it.

Ok, so this is what I've gathered:
199 U$D - 8GB iPhone 3G
299 U$D - 16GB iPhone 3G

These are 'subsidized prices'.
I read somewhere (cant remember where now); cash/prepaid pricing is:
499 U$D - 8GB iPhone 3G
599 U$D - 16GB iPhone 3G

This article says something "similar" for the euro market:
http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2008/06/12/buying-an-iphone-online-penalties-for-not-activating/
499 EUR - 8GB iPhone 3G
599 EUR - 16GB iPhone 3G

My guestimate? If you're buying the phone cash for pre-paid - expect to fork out:
499*12= 5999 ZAR - 8GB iPhone 3G
599*12= 7199 ZAR - 16GB iPhone 3G

Steve Jobs did say that it would be 199U$D all over the globe, so yeah 199U$D * 7.XX (+-R1590) is great and all, but on which contract would one have to be on to be on to pay in that amount to get the iPhone?

bleh! :(
