And, let's face it, the iPhone OS is the smoothest touchscreen experience you'll ever have, cos it's integrated into the OS.

On all Windows mobile phones, it's actually an in-house app that runs on top of the OS, like HTC touchflo. Just doesn't compare.

Very good point becuase (and this one is for the haters) you will use it on an iPhone (truly bummed that this was not amongst the new features BTW - that was my dealbreaker and why I wont be buying a 3GS.)

Specs look good or bad on paper, you can compare countless devices this way and get no indication of the execution ...on the iPhone this is the distinction and it is HUGE.

Having deckloads of features is great but not when you have to remove the battery to reset (WinMo anyone?) each time you attempt to use one of them... I know two people who have the Omnia - they both hate the thing and complain of exactly the same afflictions I suffered in 2006 on my i-Matre k-jam.
Sure in 2006 that k-jam already had some of the features that the Apple has just announced on the 3GS, I'll give you that- but I never used them becuase doing so was such an utter ball ache.
 
let the iphone haters hate the iphone.. it's a good thing, means Vodacom will always have stock :D

and prices will come down like mweb's special for R185/PM

I tend to agree with this... frankly those who tout the Winmo features as true greatness and value for money (I'm not even going to 'go there' with the Symbian anachronistas... honestly Roux :p) deserve nothing better than what they get.
 
Th iPhone is like a sportcar dressed in fine leather shoe's. Good at what it does well. but hopeless in all others.

Give me a WinMo "sports hatch" with work boots any day

Well it's getting an awful lot harder to say what it doesn't do compared to a couple of years ago. You're left with things like front-facing camera, FM radio and a crummy LED flash. Meanwhile it's great at what it does do, and the App Store adds lots of extra potential to the device.

People have been able to write apps for WM/Symbian for years, but without an App Store like system I'd be surprised if more than 20% of those smartphone owners have installed a 3rd party app.

Very true, and one of the most important features of the iphone that the iphone haters very conveniently tend to 'forget' about.

When I had my SonyEricsson P990i, there were so few apps for it, that I ended up just using it as a phone and nothing more.

With the iPhone it's so different! The 50000 apps in the app store is what really makes it great for me.

Cant wait to get my hands on tomtom navigation and the cradle that comes with it!! Very cool.
 
I'm waiting for Nokia and SonyEricsson to copy *another* Apple idea, but it must be a nightmare trying to run an app store with so many different phones and configurations.

Don't think we will see it soon. lol

Good point. I'm not an Apple fanboy either. In fact, I'm ticked off that most of the good Appstore items are not [legally] available through the SA Appstore, nor can we use the iTunes store. Though that doesn't mean there is no content or no quality content, there's plenty!

But even with all that, I'd never go back to my nokia communicator [or any other nokia] nor my IMate, HTC or my Sony Ericsson.

haha, right on! You'd have to go through 5 filter screens with giant populated selection dropdowns, and by the time you've found your specific phone, firmware version etc. you'd be left with 50 apps, thirty of them useless, and ten of the 20 who are left will generally lock up the phone and require you to remove the battery to reboot it. The remaining ten would mostly be abandoned versions left behind so the developer can focus in the "new" phone release.
Fair enough, you can't remove the iPhone's battery, but it just goes to show what's possible with decent design as opposed to upping the specs every few months until you're stuck with a giant 50 thousand Megapixel camera, 400 Terabytes of storage space, 20 second battery life, and a full sized foldout qwerty keyboard...all -STILL- running on Windows Mobile 6 ...lol

P.S. A big applause to Palm for actually realizing what the fundamental flaw with current non-iPhone smartphones was, and developing WebOS from the ground up. I hope they give the iPhone some TRUE competition, and who knows?...maybe I'll switch my iPhone for a Palm Pre one day.

Yeah, because we all know Apple only use their own ideas right? Maybe Apple could take a page from Nokia and SonyEricsson's books and copy proper multitasking.

What exactly is wrong with Symbian? Have you even used a newer model Nokia S60 phone?
 
New features? Umm how long has every other manufacturer included these features in their phones? I mean the N95 beats every feature of the iPhone (Except for not having a touch screen) and how old is it?
 
I have an iPhone. I love my iPhone. It is the best phone I have ever used.

That said I have used MANY Windows mobile phones and never found one that I enjoyed using. I have used MANY Blackberry Mobile Devices and the Bold is the first one that I really liked. I have used MANY Nokia smart phones and they are on the whole really good devices.

My point is that whether you like a phone or not depends on whether it works like your brain thinks. That is why I hate WinMo and love the iPhone. I was willing to put up with the lack of features (which occasionally annoys me) for an interface that was natural to me. This is what so many people fail to understand, its all about the user.

The one thing that Apple has over the rest of the pack is that they upgrade the software every year and the vast majority of users will upgrade. So a year after getting my iPhone I get a major system upgrade for free. This sounds like a great deal to me.

There you do it again!! Trying to brush off a HUGE difference between the n95 and the iPhone. The n95 is still a dumb phone, cos it needs a keyboard if it wanted to be clever. tsk tsk

*The n95 is not really much better than my navigator 6210, it's got everything the n95 has....just costs much less.

Here we go again, I just love it when people start comparing phones by 'ticking feature boxes'.

The fact is, I believe, you cannot compare an iPhone to any existing device (bar the Palm Pre) because they play in different spaces.

If you want a device with a feature list as long as your arm, by all means, get a WinMo device or even a N or E series Nokia. If you want the best e-mail device out there, get a Blackberry. If you want a sexy gadget that will bring a smile to your face just by using it, has an unrivalled Internet browsing experience, basic e-mail and is a good basic phone, get the iPhone.

Additionally, Apple is playing catchup to make sure it ticks all those boxes of course, it wants a bigger slice of the market, but what do you think Touch-Flo and all those other UI interfaces are trying to catchup to?

The iPhone is a sexy gadget with excellent build quality and it's feature list will grow with further firmware updates.

Let the manufacturers play their games, the iPhone is bringing much needed competition and as consumers, we will all benefit from innovation that will result.

The iPhone is not the 'one phone to rule them all', it is just the best at what it was designed to do.
