Totally agree with your rhetoric here - what is the big outrage about multitasking?? What will 'true' multitasking enable users to do that they cannot currently do on an iPhone?

I bought a 'Vista capable' notebook about a year ago and let me tell you it was far, far away from 'capable'.
Capable of hanging like a set of blue nuts, yes.
Capable of estimating that to copy a file of a few hundred megs over a network would take more days than ten average human lifetimes back to back, yes.
...the list is endless and well covered all over the internet as well as this forum and (I can only assume) written in **** on the walls of mental aylum toilet stalls the world over (from users losing their minds.. get it?)

You are 100% correct. But it's a VISTA problem and like you, I have my fingers crossed hoping that I can file the vista that came with my laptop in the same trashcan as my Windows Millenium Edition.
I meant it more generally, if you consider that each PC reader reading this, has a uniquely configured PC taylored to their needs [hopefully at least ]...

As per your initial post the rest of the world doesnt pay SA's heavily inflated prices for Apple products.

I wonder if M$oft is now going to respond by offering W7 for a similar amount considering the Vista fiasco.

They didn't offer XP at a discount after the ME fiasco, rather, they delivered XP as a good & solid OS. Lets hope they do the same for W7.

Early reviews of the RC versions are very good and I seem to remember glancing over some report that prices for Win 7 would be very competitive... doesnt really bother me - in fact I love Vista for one reason and one reason only: it was my 'rock bottom' after which I saw the light, I now run XP in a Virtualbox on my Macbook Pro for work. I dont bother with antivirus as my XP machine is essentially disposable which IMO is the only way to use Windows.

Given that crime is an issue in SA I'm surprized you blame the shops for only giving you a dummy or let it out of their sight? You can hardly blame the shop or the network for that?

I don't believe crime is the sole reason. They don't want the burden of having one or more demonstration phones to dispose of. There was a time when we could look at real phones. I know some people who would never have bought if they would have been allowed to handle a real one in the shop.

A couple of years ago, some crooks smashed a store window at N1 city and stole around 30 dummy phones.

So even they're not safe.

I have been watching the Apple commercials available on the US Apple.com. Some of them are quite funny. Worth noting, is that the fastest, most stable Vista machine ever, was running through boot camp, on a Mac. Now that is sort of funny.

On a different note, I am not sure I fully understand what great benefits multitasking will actually give me. I mean, although I know iPhone cannot do it, it sure feels like it. Half way through a mail, I go and check some stock stats, then check the internet for something, make a call, then go back to mail, and everything is still there. What will I gain? (Just interested)

You are in a game, you want to change something in your settings, you want to go back to your game but it has quit.

Or, you are on Mxit, you get an SMS, go back to the home screen to view and reply to the SMS, go back to MXit, it has quit.

I guess it is the same as MMS and a better camera. Would be nice, yes, and is very important to some, but me... I have never used the camera on my phone, and never will, and what I cannot do with email, I am never going to do with MMS. Everyone byes a phone for a different reason.

You can already send MMS's with a jailbreak and SwirlyMMS..

But the other gimmicks for the iPhone 3G are cool

Like landscape in other apps, voice control (even though i wouldn't use it), video recording, etc.

Actually those of us who are approved iphone sellers do have a live demo unit, insured to the hilt and on a monthly contract, and at mostly our own cost too! Part of the agreement to be a reseller... the power of Apple Gods!

However, apple requires us to put this on a flimsy display unit in front of the shop - never gonna happen.

By the time the alarm goes off the runner is out of sight already. So we keep it in the back and bring it out to demo.
