iPhone 3G

BTW - since when has the release of snow leopard been delayed?

ah quick question:

Video or Audio Podcasts

Video podcasts: tape the screen while the video is playing, to the right of the fast forward button is the chapter selection button.

Audio, I haven't tried yet... Sorry if you were talking about audio Podcast chapters..

Several of my colleagues were sceptical of switching to a Mac (these are regular desktop users) but ended up getting a MacBook or MacBook Pro after some months with their iPhones.

I have heard this referred to as the 'Halo Effect' where a positive experience with one product (for instance) affects your bias for other products from the same company/manufacturer.

I think that there is another device at play though: many people are very dissatisfied with the PC world at the moment and the alliances in place (HP/MS I am talking about you schlenters!) and are maybe even on a subconcious level looking for alternatives.
Many of these people are also experiencing this dissatisfaction for the first time (cant remember the pre SP XP woes) and are filled with the passion of, well first disappointments. So its not just iPod/iPhone drawing people to Apple but other forces pushing too, so thats a fairly bleak outlook for all you long-time-pro-level-real-customers

I have read from some sites that the phone is going to be availible from the end of the month (July)

Here are some sites

I would like to get the new one but I am much more interested in the version 2.0 software that I can install on my 1st Gen phone. As the App store are packed with apps.

I read also that they have jailbroken the version 2.0 software and they are in the process of releasing the pwnage tool.

But we will have to wait and see.

alf101, the new one only has 3G and GPS added as far as the hardware goes. EDGE is quite good enough for e-mail and surfing on a 3" screen.

I was using MTN 3G/HSDPA before I moved over here - the card showed it was using GPRS/EDGE most of the time, and even then I frequently had to fall back on my cellphone (could use it as a modem) with CellC.

I guess there's no win-win situation in S.A. :(

U got that right, I was in Bloem and Pretoria last weekend and couldn't even get GPRS:(
When I got off the plane in CT, it worked fine.

Only the VC site is reliable with availability of the iPhone and they say nothing of a release at the end of the month.

As for the App store (the local one) - have you seen the junk available there - sorry mate, there is nothing there compared to app availability for the WinMobile platform.

Don't get me wrong, I will probably end up getting one but that will be for my craze of having the latest gadget...

The only decent cell phone app I've used is Opera mini.
N/A for iPhone.

To be fair, WM has been around a bit longer, so surely there would be more apps for it. And there are heaps of junk available for it too. There are really useful apps for the iPhone as well

You don't need it. Opera Mini doesn't offer anything that Safari doesn't. It doesn't offer very good security either, what with their man-in-the-middle server. Opera Mobile, now that's a different story. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Opera makes it available anyway.

I want Opera for bandwidth reasons.
There isn't any other cell phone app that I actually needed - on any platform.

But if vodacom offers the iphone the way its supposed to be offered (iow uncapped) then you wont have to worry about that.

Of course what are the chances of that happening . . . .?

We'll have to wait, won't be cheap.
They may "give away" 100 megs a month or something.
