Several of my colleagues were sceptical of switching to a Mac (these are regular desktop users) but ended up getting a MacBook or MacBook Pro after some months with their iPhones.
alf101, the new one only has 3G and GPS added as far as the hardware goes. EDGE is quite good enough for e-mail and surfing on a 3" screen.
I was using MTN 3G/HSDPA before I moved over here - the card showed it was using GPRS/EDGE most of the time, and even then I frequently had to fall back on my cellphone (could use it as a modem) with CellC.
I guess there's no win-win situation in S.A.![]()
I have read from some sites that the phone is going to be availible from the end of the month (July)
Here are some sites

I would like to get the new one but I am much more interested in the version 2.0 software that I can install on my 1st Gen phone. As the App store are packed with apps.
I read also that they have jailbroken the version 2.0 software and they are in the process of releasing the pwnage tool.
But we will have to wait and see.
Only the VC site is reliable with availability of the iPhone and they say nothing of a release at the end of the month.
As for the App store (the local one) - have you seen the junk available there - sorry mate, there is nothing there compared to app availability for the WinMobile platform.
Don't get me wrong, I will probably end up getting one but that will be for my craze of having the latest gadget...
The only decent cell phone app I've used is Opera mini.
N/A for iPhone.

To be fair, WM has been around a bit longer, so surely there would be more apps for it. And there are heaps of junk available for it too. There are really useful apps for the iPhone as well
You don't need it. Opera Mini doesn't offer anything that Safari doesn't. It doesn't offer very good security either, what with their man-in-the-middle server. Opera Mobile, now that's a different story. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Opera makes it available anyway.
But if vodacom offers the iphone the way its supposed to be offered (iow uncapped) then you wont have to worry about that.I want Opera for bandwidth reasons.
There isn't any other cell phone app that I actually needed - on any platform.

Of course what are the chances of that happening . . . .?
