Iphone 4 or other Smartphone....?

I am due for my upgrade on my talk 1000 package on the 2nd of september, i want to get the best smartphone on the market at the time. I have been doing LOTS of research on the phones on the market now including the iphone4 and i still cant decide on the phone to get!

Please would you guys give me some advice on the matter (what phone i should get or if i should wait etc..). I called the upgrade centre and they said they will be getting a list of new phones available at the beginning of September..
 
"The best smartphone on the market" ... something tells me the trolls are fanboys are gonna have a field day tomorrow :)

You're asking the wrong questions - the smartphone market has something for everyone - there isn't one 'best phone' that trumps all the rest.
Different phones are better suited to different people/situations - and there's one for every type of person.

One thing about the iPhone - make sure you're more keen for a touch-screen than a tactile keyboard. Most people find it much easier to message with a tactile qwerty keyboard... to most iPhone users this doesnt matter at all.

Rather, consider your requirements of a potential phone and how you want interact with the phone (touch/keyboard/bit of both) and take it from there. That'll hopefully keep the fanboys on topic and contributing to your question, rather than ranting and raving about whichever one they decided to lock themselves into with a 24 month contract :)

I am a Nokia boy... omg 1000 minutes on the phone - thats enough to set my ear on fire!! :)
 
I use blackberry for unlimited internet access and get my work e-mail gets pushed to it. What do you want from your smart phone?

Or Samsung Galaxy S, which will likely get here before the iPhone4 - it has been getting very favourable reviews overseas and the few guys who have imported seem very happy.

Out of those three whichever you choose will mainly be because of personal taste.

@alexjay - unlimited internet is a bit of a misnomer. You still get charged for things like youtube. For what you pay for BIS you can just buy a data bundle and get the exact same functionality.

Personally I type faster with an iPhone virtual keyboard than with a hardware keyboard, thanks partially to auto-correct, and also because my fingers just have to touch the screen rather than press anything. Some Android phones now come with Swype, which I have tried but is getting rave reviews.

I say wait until September and see what the options are then. Seriously, this market changes that quickly.
 
yeah i understand that but i mean im looking for a touch screen. With a good processor, Ram and expandable memory. I know the Desire is the best htc currently available in SA and so too the iphone4 on apple (be it only coming in september or so). For me i have been looking around and i really like the htc EVO 4G, i know that its not and most likely wont be coming to SA but i really like the EVO 4G specs.

I really would like to know if you guys think some of the specs and cool features we see from the EVO 4G might be coming to a phone in SA as soon as september?

Wait until RIM announce the 9800 and then see what your options are.
 
Take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S. Similar specs to the Evo, and an awesome screen.
It's a pity the Evo is only in the US because it seems like an excellent smartphone.

Wow, you must get an insane amount of email... The majority of the BB owners that work with me don't crack 100MB.

The closest phone to the EVO (and some would go as far as to argue better) is the Samsung Galaxy S, apparently landing here sometime in August.
 
The last two days I downloaded which feels too me almost a gig worth of youtube movies for free. You just can't stream from YOUTUBE on BIS, but you can download.

Edit:
I am in the same position as the OP, currently for me it is between the Desire and Bold 9700. But if the bold 9800 lands before my upgrade date, there will be (no debate in my mind.

According to Cell C, Samsung Galaxy S is available on Active Chat 100, it costs R280.00, there is no pay in amount required on the specified package.
 
Ok, I have confirmation from Cell's Twitter feed that according to their sales people, the GalaxyS is currently available for purchase. No need to wait for August. :)

I will continue to love my i8910HD.
