I received my new iPhone 4S yesterday, and I'm loving it so far. However, having switched from Blackberry, I'm having to get used to worrying about data usage once again.

My contract comes with a 100MB data bundle included. I use wifi at home, so the large majority of the internet usage on my phone whilst at home will be via wifi (unless I'm in a part of the house with no signal).

I was wondering how much data I can expect to use per month if I leave the standard services on, such as Location Services, Siri etc. I'm considering bolting an additional 500MB/month onto my contract, but I wanted to make sure that this isn't either too much or too little.

I've received approximately 13.1MB, and sent approximately 750KB since around 7AM this morning, which is worrying me a little. I did download WhatsApp and sign up for a new iTunes Store account on my phone, so I would assume that this would have accounted for the large majority of the downloaded data? I have no clue what the WhatsApp download size would have been, hence the confusion.

Many thanks :)

Got my 4S at the Vodacom midnight launch (was it December last year?).

Cellular data usage:
Sent 56.1MB
Received 247MB

Looks like I use a little more than 100MB a month. I have a 1GB data bundle from Vodacom... looks like I need to cut down.

Thanks for the info! Do you use the likes of Location Services, Siri, push mail etc?

Good to know, thanks! I think I'll try out a 500MB bundle for a month and if my usage is lower than downgrade to 250MB :)

I have a iPhone 4 and I get 150Mb a month with MTN. I also have WIFI at home. I have all my notifications (email, location services etc) turned on and I only use about 70Mb a month. I download all my apps etc at home. I think 100Mb a month should suffice.

Do you use push for the likes of your email, Twitter and/or Facebook? I have it active for all three and I'm wondering whether that'll rack up a lot of data usage per month.

Has anyone used Onavo, by the way? Apparently it reduces your data usage significantly.

Yes. I do push all my emails to my phone. I received about 25-50 emails per day. I also receive 5-15 messages a day on Facebook (likes, comments etc). I do not have a twitter account.

You should be fine with having everything on.

So I see that the WhatsApp download was 9.1MB, which explains the majority of my usage for yesterday. I'm sitting at 16.5MB or so at the moment, which isn't too bad. I'll try installing Onavo and see what effect it has on my usage as well :)

Do keep us updated.

I have 250mb bundle from MTN and wifi at home and at work so and i've used 240mb in one weekend when i was away from my wifi, so i think 2gb could be quiet easy
i adore the phone wont ever go back to bb, if you have a laptop get Connectify its an awesome app so you can use your laptop as a hotspot to connect your phone to. it's save me a load on Cellular data.
