iPhone 5 in SA: early adopter pricing

There are people out there that will pay that (and more) just to be first amongst friends/family/colleagues with an iPhone 5.

I you don't think it is too expensive, then you need to educate yourself on the value of phones and money. You must be hemorrhaging money left right and center.

You spending R2000 on a pair of jeans will undoubtedly seem like hemorrhaging money to a homeless person, but that doesn't make it so.
Or is the cut off line what you think it is? Is it an absolute number?

Perceived value and not actual value talks here. For the person with money to burn and friends to impress the perceived value (R13k) would be fair (many in SA these days get money for nothing by just being a name at the bottom of a company letter head). For the rest of us it is absolutely crazy.

Phone thieves across the country are rejoicing and rubbing their palms in eager anticipation.

If I was Apple I would bring out a platinum version of the iPhone. It will be a top seller in all banana republics and mafia-run states.

No offense, but VW is pretty rubbish and a VW Fox is even worse.
I personally don't think R13k is much for a phone, but I understand why some segments of the population would not be able to afford it. But I don't see anything wrong with that

So if VW is rubbish then which car brand in that segment is good in your opinion?

so if R13k is cheap for a phone may i ask where did you have lunch today and what did it cost you?

EDIT: im just trying to get some context to why you replied the iphone is a "bargain" priced phone

Apple could sell a ice of poooo and label it the Iphone and the fanbois would still line up to purchase it

And people would rage about how theres no peanuts or corn in it when the galaxy S poo has both.

It could have come in at 25k for the base model and he would have told you how cheap it is for what you really get.

Now you're just fishing to find out what I am worth.
The point is simple. For many, many people R13k is a lot of money. However, for many people, it is a small amount of money.
As Apple has always targeted the high end, this makes sense.
And remember, 13k is half the price of some (better designed) phones. So they are seemingly trying to get the middle-income market as well

No, now you are making blatantly false accusations. There are phones available at that price (R25k) and they are worth it as their design is better. The iPhone doesn't make that cut. I doubt they could get away with charging more than R15k for the iPhone

Wait a minute. The R13k these companies are asking for the device is not Apple's recommend retail price but rather just another example of how South African companies seek to shaft consumers.

actually i dont care what you worth ...

which phone out there besides a Vetru (*spelling) or tag heuer (and those are more jewellery pieces than anything else) is more than R13k ... im hard pressed to think of any ...

i got R13k ... but heck i aint spending that on a phone ... its the value you getting for your money ...

and the cars VW make are pretty good and thats inherent in their resale values, which leads me to think you dont know much about much

Can you please link to any? I have never seen anything like this.

How much must a phone cost before you call it expensive?

You're either lying or bragging. Neither is very commendable.

Many people who are extremely wealthy do not go around buying expensive items just because they can. To them the value of a product is tied to the product itself and to price thereof, rather than to their own financial position.
