Are you being wilfully obtuse? There's a difference between an individual's subjective valuation of a given monetary amount and an objective analysis of the same. One of your idols - Justin Bieber, say - might be able to spend R20k on a pair of jeans with a smile on her face, but it's still a ****-off huge amount of money for a jean pant.

Sure. Nothing wrong with that. Same as there is nothing wrong with somebody buying a R100k watch instead of a R100 watch, if they feel the design is better.
Everyone has their own personal line.
I feel some breads are better than others, and don't mind paying more for it. Some people might however feel that the increase is not justified for them. It doesn't make the bread over-priced however

I think R20k for a pair of jeans is too much for me. R10k however might be fine for me. For someone else R500 might be the right price.
So how do you define what is too much other than each person's level of wealth

Yeah, you are right, R4000 is to much for a lucky packet phone. With screen bleeds at the edges, WiFi issues, purple haze in pictures, chipping edges, stupid mapping software etc... this is way to much for that phone. For that money one can do much better.

R2bn also wasn't too much for a private jet for Zuma, neither was R200m for his house.
 
So it's the most expensive "consumer" phone ever and JStrike says it's cheap for a phone... err? Clearly he's the kind of person that would actually go and buy one of these gold/diamond encrusted things. My opinion of most iphone owners is that they just bought them to "show off" really. The kind of people that when you go out to dinner with will put their iphone <latest> and their bmw or whatever keys on the table just so you know they have them :p

If you have trouble making these kinds of judgement calls, how do you manage to dress yourself in the mornings? Or do you have someone earning a reasonable wage to pick out your clothes every day?

A cursory quality vs features vs competitors vs cost analysis is not rocket science, and that goes for pretty much any consumer goods. If there's value to be had I'll pay R2k for <insert random product here>, but I'll consider people who pay 10 times that for a variation that doesn't offer much more to be mildly retarded at best... regardless of how far up their arses they may or may not have their silver spoons stuck.

Basically, this ^

In my analogy from earlier, I could easily afford the pre-packaged "freshline" hot dog rolls. My personal financial situation did therefore not determine my decision to not buy it. JStrike does not quite grasp this.
