I'm trying to backup my iPhone 5S (first backup since purchase) but it keeps telling me I don't have enough storage on my macbook.

I've double & triple checked that I do actually have enough storage so I dunno what the dealio is. I've also tried to backup to iCloud in desperation but even then it comes with the same error that my macbook doesnt have enough storage space :confused::confused: What iCloud backup and laptop storage have to do with one another, I havent quite figured out...

Also, the phone says I have no memory left which confuses me. I've checked the usage stats and it says I have 3.42GB in 'Other' and 1171 photos. of that 1171, 1000 are in my Photo Stream. I dont want to turn off Photo Stream but this is a bit ridiculous.

Any tips?

EDIT: new development... Everytime I try back up the phone it increases the Other storage folder...

I don't think it's the Mac that doesn't have space, it could be your phone.

Check your iTunes settings and that not everything syncs to your phone. Turn off iCloud and try again.

How much space do you have on your MacBook? Do you use TimeMachine on it?

I have 22,6GB free on my macbook - hence the confusion...

Well yeah, my phone is chockablock which is partly why I wanted to backup so that I can clear some stuff like pics etc off (it was while I was moving my pics into iPhoto that the backup failed for the first time and I'm trying to figure out why :( ). That said, the error coming up specifically says the computer is out of memory. It even says to empty folders from the trash (but my trash is already empty).

Which iOS are you on?

I am also struggling to backup my iPhone 5S 64GB to iCloud. I have used 44 odd GB on my phone and therefor increased my iCloud storage to 200GB, but it won't backup (keep getting the 'Estimating time remaining' for hours) over wifi or plugged into my MBA. I am wondering if the increased iCloud storage is really necessary, and whether only the most important data (not including pics) is supposed to be backed up to iCloud?

Another thing - I have 155GB free on my MBA, with 60GB 'Other', 30GB 'Apps' and only 6GB 'Photos' - does the photos on my phone go under 'Other' on the MBA? I also have my husbands iPhone 5 and a iPad that backs up to my MBA, and I am using iOS 8.0.2 and Yosemite.

You shouldn't have to turn off photo stream as it doesn't fall under your iCloud allotment. It would only fall under your allotment if you're using iCloud Photo Library (Beta).

How much is your expected backup size compared to available iCloud storage. You can check this under manage storage under settings > iCloud.

The problem I suspect you're having when attempting to backup to the MacBook is that it is trying to "transfer all purchases" as well and as you have a little over 22Gb available I can see you hitting some trouble. My apps take up over 40Gb on my hard drive. Then there is also it being a first backup and your Safari data might be huge too.

As for your "other" increasing every time the backup fails... This is probably due to the phone storing the page files as it isn't being written to disk.
