A bunch of friends and family members have iPhones, ranging from the 4s to the 5s. Obviously the 5s performs the best, but I notice varying degrees of lag in all of them.

It seems you have very little experience with these devices. Where have you noticed lag on the iPhone 5 and 5s?

I've not heard of or seen a high end Android smartphone having lag in years (and I do test a lot of devices), and I don't see it on my rather old Xperia S either. Sure, Samsung devices still exhibit this at times, but this is down to the poorly developed overlay that they place on top of Android- which you can't really criticise the base OS for.

Android L will move Android up a notch in terms of transition animations and the like, and from the preview I used, close to parity with iOS.

I always found my Xperia V to be laggy. If I look through my phone now, I can't find any areas of lag, beyond what the iPhone5 has. I agree with that then. My one app is still not as smooth but that's really nitpicking and even that's improved a lot. I still think iOS is doing a lot more onscreen than Android, but I'm not so bothered about such flourishes.

Are you currently using it? What do you have on the G2 now? I'm really excited for Android L.

Well now comparing a mid range phone to a high end phone that costs several times its price seems to be your problem then.

The Xperia V was the same internal spec as their then-top of the line Xperia T, just a smaller body. And better spec than MJ's Xperia S. I think it's more a case of iterative software improvements in both the OS and the apps that have made the UI smoother over time. Going from 4.0 to 4.4.2 is quite a large jump.

Agreed. L will fix that, and Apple do a lot more in that regard- hence why their GPU's have always been a cut above most Android device GPU's.

Not anymore, sadly. Used it when I still had the Nexus 5 (the developer preview). It was a night and day difference in terms of animations, transitions and overall smoothness. For the first time, the OS felt responsive. I'm really excited for the launch of L, personally I finally will be satisfied with the level of polish that has gone into it.

G2 is still stock, SO is currently using it as her device is in for repairs. Yeah, I'm generous like that :D

To be fair- I also had a Samsung Galaxy S2, which lagged quite regularly on the stock OS, and it has similar specs (and should perform better considering the lower resolution that it has) to the Xperia S. I've just found Sony's skin to be far less resource intensive (and attractive) than Touchwiz, and it has only improved upon each update.

Seems like the new camera is at least as good as that of the S5 Galaxy.

http://blogs.wsj.com/personal-techn...5-photo-shootout-why-megapixels-mean-nothing/

The iPhone 5s is already better than the Galaxy S5. The 6 will be better, and importantly, be more consistent in various conditions, which is key.

S4/S5 cameras were a huge step up from Samsung. They just need to focus on lens quality instead of megapixels. Then again, they're pandering to a crowd heavily into specs, and what ever is higher sounds better and sells.

Sony laughs at iPhone 6′s protruding camera, says Xperia Z3 is better

Apple may have tried to Photoshop out the protruding camera on its new iPhones but everyone – including Sony – has seen through it. Sony has posted a jab directed at Apple on its Facebook page saying “the only thing that sticks out with the Xperia Z3 camera is its features…”

gsmarena_001.jpg

Granted the Xperia Z3 is slightly thicker but it’s just by a hair – it measures 7.3mm thick, while the iPhone 6 is 6.9mm thick.

Of course, the Sony also has a larger sensor (1/2.3″ vs. 1/3″), a large 3,100mAh battery and waterproofing (IP68), all of which undoubtedly contribute to its overall thickness.

The smaller Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is thicker than both – 8.6mm – but has the same camera is its sibling, same water-resistance rating and amazing battery life. It’s the more direct competitor to the iPhone 6 so I have to wonder why Sony didn’t use it for this jab (because of the thickness, I’m guessing).

According to who?

It's a fact. Don't get me wrong, the S5 takes beautiful pictures and panoramas - but it's not quite as consistent as the 5s. Nor does the S5 autofocus/tap to focus as fast as the 5s.

Evidenced in the below video (which funnily enough also shows some of the usual Android lag).

I don't see what the issues are? Also, you're using a video from MWC 2014, when the S5 was running beta software. The phone was only released in April 2014.

I've got an S5 and the camera bugs the crapp out of me. Half the time you need to hold still and wait a few secs to capture the shot.

1. 0:29 - there is lag opening the camera
2. 0:56 - slower tap to focus than the 5s
3. 1:00 - unresponsiveness and lag.

etc.

This all within the first minute of the video.

Same as every S5 I've played with. :(

Does the iPhone 6 have a dedicated camera button?

This is becoming big for me. Really dislike having to touch the screen for a photo as I sometimes miss when having my arm fully streched out and then it refocusses(Or whatever that is my phone is doing).

The volume buttons have been dedicated camera/shutter buttons for as long as I can remember.

You've always been able to snap a photo using the volume control, either on the handset or using headphones.
