What it doesn't know won't hurt it. It's probably running a fragmented OS too.

It's running Cyanogenmod 11s, which is a stone's throw from vanilla Android but has some excellent enhancements. Unlike most manufacturer bloatware, CM just adds customisability and leaves everything else alone.

Fragmentation in Android usually refers to the version of Android being used, and CM 11s has long since been updated to 4.4.4. My phone isn't rooted or running custom firmware.

That's how I understand it. I've experienced a few CM flavours, still not as smooth and lag free as other devices which have half or a third the RAM, and dual core CPUs. I take it you understand this too, which should show you why your price and "not cool" gripes are in vain.

The OnePlus One is the only device to ever run Cyanogenmod out the box, so you've never used this CM. I ran CM for years as custom firmware before buying the One and I've never seen it so smooth and so fast.

CM11 has come a long way over the years, and offers a faster user experience with greater battery life and no bloat..
It has just what you need, the entire ROM is around 300MB

I will definitely look out for one to play around with and I look forward to it, but I have my doubts. And even then, it's potentially only one aspect of how I think a device should perform and what I appreciate, being met. The OPO lacks in other ways which are important to me.

But in the meantime you do at least then concede that CM on other Android phones like Samsungs, LGs, Sonys and HTCs isn't smooth and lag free. We're good for now.

Considering that the iPhone 5 and 5s aren't lag free, I don't see why that matters. Any current flagship device should run CM very well, but obviously not as well as a device that CM was specifically built for.

I'm surprised to hear this, as the iPhone 5 and 5s are both my main devices, and I've had nothing but a fluid experience with both. The difference I've noticed on the 5 is slightly slower (but still smooth) with UI animations at times, and slower tap to focus in Camera. Responsiveness, scrolling, messaging, and typing are identical. Where've you experienced lag?

Only people I know who have had lag issues with those phones have Jailbroken them.
I have yet to have ANY lag issues on iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S, iPad 3 on the other hand I experience lag sometimes.

Not only does iOS lag less, but it's doing a lot more graphically than Android at the same time. The animations are still a world ahead. If I tap a folder on my G2 it pops up a little folder with really no animated effect - the same tap in iOS transforms the whole screen. It's easy enough to eliminate lag if you also eliminate anything processor-intensive but try adding effects and still keeping lag down.

A bunch of friends and family members have iPhones, ranging from the 4s to the 5s. Obviously the 5s performs the best, but I notice varying degrees of lag in all of them. The most annoying thing is how iPhones have issues with IM. Frequently there are delays with sending messages.

Jailbreaking is very common. People like to customise their phone it seems. Don't know why they don't just get an Android if that's the case.

That couldn't be further from the truth. Android has unlimited customisability, and many popular launchers and custom firmware have very graphically intense transition effects. Also, any Android phone can have a live wallpaper and active widgets in the homescreens. Folder animations count for pretty much nothing in terms of processing power. If someone doesn't like the folder animation in their version of Android, as with any other part of the system, they're free to download an app that can change it.

What if you used your iPhone a lot more and productively than with the Galaxies when you were just flashing custom ROMs?

Nope I use largely the same apps across both platforms and similar usage patterns across both, and no I don't waste my time tinkering with roms, rooting, jailbreaking etc,I tried once many moons ago on one of my first androids and on my iphone 4,ipad to get xbmc i tried jailbreaking but it irritates me to be honest.

I'm using an s5 right now and don't see the lag mentioned here, where should I be seeing this?

The size of the initial download isn't the size of the app with Android. Try install it (as I did before replying), and then see the actual size...

On Android its only downloading 23MB so I guess its a compressed package where on iTunes it doesn't seem to be (not sure it says 66.6 MB on iTunes).

Ok so if I stick a live wallpaper on my phone let's see what happens - it lags. You can see the transitions from screens getting noticeably choppy from frame to frame. Beyond that.. well I'm not seeing very much that could count as graphically intense in the UI, especially compared to iOS..... multitasking preview, opening and closing apps, the notification pane... nope.

Get the battery doctor app, it cleans up your ram and junk files - tends to find alot constantly, what the junk files are nobody knows...close all your apps on a daily basis, clean out your chats and recent call logs and it runs smoothly no issues, i love my 5!

A live wallpaper should definitely not make your phone lag, unless your phone has poor hardware. Widgets can be more taxing than a live wallpaper. As I said, Android has unlimited customisability, so you can spruce up the graphics do your heart's content. There are 3D launchers available if you really care about visuals.

It doesn't slow down the hardware particularly, it just gets a bit choppy round the edges when it moves from frame to frame. In fact it's not really fair to grouse about performance of Android on this phone as it's really a good performer.
