Got my iPhone 6 this weekend.

I have had almost all of the Galaxy line of the phones and one tab, so it is quite an adjustment. It was a bit weird doing all of the settings in settings, but I think I can get used to that. Also, iOS8 doesn't allow you to change that much, but that is not the end of the world.

I have already installed all of my favourite apps and the phone lasted for from Friday till now, I charged it but it could probably still have gone a few hours.

One thing I wanted to know, how can you sync just your calendar from outlook. On iTunes it says contacts, calendar and tasks or something, but it doesn't want to allow me to just sync the calendar. Also, is their no other way to just sync the outlook calendar with the icloud calendar the way the old google sync allowed?

I love the finger print unlock, it works really well. Much better than the S5. I also love that I can use it to buy things.

I am happy with the UI, much more responsive than I am used to (and I did use CM11), although I do miss my calendar widget.

Now for the badish things - Maps isn't close to google maps, so I still use the galaxy currently.
I couldn't find my attachments using mail although I could see it has, so I installed gmail, but I can't uninstall Mail. Seems like a waist.
Is it just me, or are the equivalent apps more expensive in the App Store.

I saw the pictures of Cal and it looks really impressive. It looks like you can add your own pictures and additional information to the calendar entry. Will look at it tonight.

I will also have to go have a look at the other most used apps.

But so far I like the phone, will probably just have to get used to a few things.

I prefer the Whatsapp layout on iOS to the Android layout.

Settings menu on iOS is a nightmare but so is Android's. All those categories and sub-categories. Someone on both sides needs to get their act together. The main conceptual difference is that iOS places most app settings in the Settings menu and Android places them in a menu in the app.

What's wrong with iOS music app? I love it. The interface is solid and very attractive. There isn't even a good Android equivalent. Doubletwist is the closest and it's rubbish.

Mail Messages
Agreed. I particularly miss having integrated Hangouts SMS and messaging. Mail I just totally ignore and use the Gmail app. I barely use SMS messaging these days except to receive FNB notifications.

Again, there isn't an integrated photo app on Android. The one in iOS isn't bad except I'm still confused exactly how they're working out the metadata settings, and it's a bit annoying to have my Whatsapp pics thrown in with my album.

App Store
Meh, it's much of a muchness between iOS and Play Store interface. But someone needs to sort out the findability on iOS I agree.

iOS simply chucks all photos into Camera Roll  I prefer the way Android does it, with a folder for each app's photos.

I take it that you are using Windows. Download the iCloud control panel. Syncing of calendars will happen over the air.

Sunrise Calendar is free, looks great, syncs with Gcal and has an attractive widget.

I prefer the Whatsapp layout on iOS to the Android layout.

I don't see how you possibly can. It has such an inefficient design, with the tabs along the bottom as well as options along the top. When in a chat screen, there are multiple buttons for extra options and pressing them is finicky. The options list that appears when you press the ambiguous arrow icon looks like something from a low budget app. In fact, the entire app looks pretty budget.

Android on the other hand has a totally clean interface. There is only a list of contacts when you open the app with a minimalistic button layout on top that contains all the features of the app. Within a chat screen the layout remains clean, and any options are laid out clearly and present well designed lists and elements.

Settings menu on iOS is a nightmare but so is Android's. All those categories and sub-categories. Someone on both sides needs to get their act together. The main conceptual difference is that iOS places most app settings in the Settings menu and Android places them in a menu in the app.

Android's settings menu is only a nightmare if you're running LG or Samsung firmware. Otherwise it's laid out logically and getting around is a breeze. It also doesn't overlap with the settings of individual apps, so there is no confusion about where to find the settings you're looking for. iOS severely overlaps with individual app settings, but not all app settings, which is a hilariously poor design philosophy.

What's wrong with iOS music app? I love it. The interface is solid and very attractive. There isn't even a good Android equivalent. Doubletwist is the closest and it's rubbish.

I could just be spoiled by the quality music apps on Android, but the iOS Music app is rubbish to me.

- Has a prominent link to the iTunes store
- Scrolling through the albums for a particular artist feels claustrophobic
- Too many options are displayed on most screens
- The tabbed navigation layout is archaic. Android moved on from that long ago.
- Browsing is a tad laggy (I've used the app on an iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6)
- The font sizes look like crap
- Only a handful of tabs can actually be displayed without going to an overflow screen.
- The Now Playing screen looks very, very average for a music app

It's not a disaster of an app, but compared to professionally made third party music apps it doesn't hold a candle. Not to mention it doesn't support FLAC.

Agreed. I particularly miss having integrated Hangouts SMS and messaging. Mail I just totally ignore and use the Gmail app. I barely use SMS messaging these days except to receive FNB notifications.

Smsing is still an important part of daily cellphone use to many people though, including both my parents. The crappy app on iOS is a cause of continuous frustration.

Again, there isn't an integrated photo app on Android. The one in iOS isn't bad except I'm still confused exactly how they're working out the metadata settings, and it's a bit annoying to have my Whatsapp pics thrown in with my album.

Almost everyone with an Android phone uses QuickPic for their gallery, although I've seen some decent looking gallery apps on the recent versions of Sony, Samsung, LG and Cyanogenmod firmware. They're as 'integrated' as anyone would need them to be - all images appear automatically in their respective folders, excluding certain folders takes a second, as does editing, moving, syncing or sharing them. It's all completely straight forward.

On iOS the Photos app is a nightmare. Nothing makes sense, it's a horrible design, too many pics are just thrown together etc.

Meh, it's much of a muchness between iOS and Play Store interface. But someone needs to sort out the findability on iOS I agree.

The Play Store humiliates the App Store. The Play Store has a sensible landing page, an easy means of checking out apps you've installed previously, will always display the price of something you're trying to buy (the in-app purchase to remove ads in the calculator app my step-dad installed on his iPad asked for his Apple password without ever displaying a price - naturally he just cancelled), can display more than one freakin' app at a time when searching (I've never seen such shocking design) and displays same-language reviews from all over the world instead of just for your region.

Finding apps is a chore on iOS. Review scores are either nonexistent or bogus in many, many cases thanks to the pathetically low number of South African reviews. No information is given as to file sizes being downloaded or speeds you're downloading at. The order of search results is highly questionable and makes me think developers can pay to receive priority. Displaying one result at a time is the most infuriating thing out of all the issues. And the prices are frequently higher than on the Play Store, and sometimes free Android apps are not free on iOS.

---------------------

The apps I mentioned above were just off the top of my head. Apple Maps also sucks. The Notes app sucks. The Weather, Clock, Health, Calendar, Contacts, Podcasts, Newsstand, Game Center, Reminders, Voice Memos and Phone apps suck too.

The quality of the apps in iOS is appalling in my opinion.

Hmm, thanks. Will give it a try. Is there no way to I can not sync my contacts and mail. I just want the calendar to be synced?

Looks like you've never seen it period.... try scrolling down to see more apps

This is actually true

Finding apps is a chore on iOS. Review scores are either nonexistent or bogus in many, many cases thanks to the pathetically low number of South African reviews. No information is given as to file sizes being downloaded or speeds you're downloading at.

The size is there clear as day

The order of search results is highly questionable and makes me think developers can pay to receive priority.

Well they can't

Displaying one result at a time is the most infuriating thing out of all the issues.

Scroll down, plenty are displayed

Yea like I said above, one's initial opinion of another OS is very largely down to muscle memory and habit. You're accustomed to holding a message to bring up a context menu, so having to search for it elsewhere seems like terrible design. It's a very shallow way of forming an opinion. You really need to spend weeks or months with an OS and actually live with it for your opinion to have any validity. Windows Phone seems pretty decent until you start looking for comparable apps to iOS or Android.

One thing I do wish is that iOS contacts had Google Hangouts integration with icons. It helps to find people quickly.

I could just be spoiled by the quality music apps on Android, but the iOS Music app is rubbish to me.
Which exactly? I searched desperately for a good quality music app in Android and came up empty. Doubletwist is the closest but really it's pretty awful.

I would agree there, to me music playback is a weakness of Android, I haven't found a decent music player (I've even paid for some on the recommendation of others, only to be disappointed with overall use/sound quality), nor have I found an android phone with the same sound quality as the iPhone for music playback. The best I have found so far is PowerAmp, but still not good enough.

Hmm, it does sync - but not the way I want it too. It syncs my iCloud things to an icloud calendar in outlook, but it doesn't sync my default calendar to iCloud, which is what I want. What use is seeing your personal meetings on your work PC. I want to see my work meetings to remind me of these meetings as most of the time I am not in my office.

It's supposed to upload whatever calendars you have to iCloud. Close Outlook and sign out of the iCloud control panel.

If you have an IMAP / Exchange account save yourself the hassle and just add the account in "Mail, Contacts, Calendars "

Otherwise the best place to begin troubleshooting is Apple's support.

Give that a try.

Seems like you can't make it work

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6482579

I can't access my mail from outside work, so I was hoping for something that would just sync my default outlook calendar to iCloud. iCloud control panel creates a iCloud calendar in outlook where you can add meetings and then it will sync. But when people invite me it goes to the default calendar. I will then have to manually copy the meetings I am going to over. Which I didn't want to do.

I suppose it is better than nothing though.

No sane person should enter their password before they've committed to purchasing something. I didn't say that search results only presented one app - I said (twice) that only one result is displayed at a time. Obviously you can scroll away to see the other results, but it's a slow and cumbersome way to search the store.

The article you linked that reckoned that some iOS apps are unmatched on Android was talking BS. I would use Falcon Pro over Tweetbot, DigiCal+ over Fantastical and Tasks over Clear.

Android has a bunch of excellent music players. Poweramp, Rocket Player, Shuttle and some others. Rocket Player is probably the best app of them, and iSyncr is the best iTunes syncing app by far. I also use DI.fm (which has a turd of an iOS app), RadioTunes (sister service of DI.fm, so same story) and Simfy.

I don't dislike iOS because things aren't where I'm used to. I couldn't care less where UI elements are placed - what I care about is how easy the apps are to use. iOS apps are not easy to use, and in most cases it's impossible to make a case for the design choices being very good.

If there's one reason I prefer Apple Maps over Google Maps it's that when you lock your phone it switches the screen off and only pops up when you need to do something.

That is super efficient on the battery.

I also find the voice navigation flows better and cross fades music better which is really noticeable when I'm on the bike.

Google Maps has really been to slow to respond on voice alone in many cases.
