It's not just about quirks and the change of scenery. It's how the apps are designed and laid out, even important apps like WhatsApp, Settings, Music, Mail, Messages, Photos, App Store etc. It's like they're crappy third party apps from years gone by on Google Market, except it's iOS 8. The functions are frequently placed nonsensically, if at all. To me, good design allows an app to be navigated quickly without being familiar with it. Most of the iOS apps don't come close to achieving this.
When I'm with my step-dad and he needs help with something to do with his new iPhone, even I need to fiddle around for a bit in most cases. Most recently he couldn't forward a message to someone. I showed him how without much trouble, but the interface to do so looked like something from the early days of touchscreens. You hold down on the message and get a pathetic options list, you press for more functions, you're presented with a massive blank space with two seperate delete functions, you select a tiny little arrow icon in the lower right corner and then get a poorly designed screen to facilitate forwarding. My god it's tragic. A first year design student should be able to design something better than that. Suddenly I appreciate Messages and Hangouts on Android.
