Hi

I have an iPhone 4 32gig and I've been having problems with its reception. I expreience a lot of dropped calls as well as the phone just losing signal and then I have to switch it off and back on again for it to work again. My girlfriend also has one and at times when mine says no signal hers wiuld be fine. Last week there was one day that I had to switch it off 4 times.

Now the dropped calls can be due to Vodacom's crap network, but dit loss of signal makes me think that something is wrong with the antenna.

Has anyone had the same experience

Do you drop the calls when cupping the iPhone in your hand? If you use an iPhone 4 cover at all it should not be affected.

I think that you need to come to the realisation that it is you and not the phone or the network. :)

According to myth, iPhone 4s are supposed to have a problem with the antenna as it is placed around the internals just inside the cover. Your body's bio-electrical effect/force field/whatever interferes with the signal and it drops. Or, you are just plain holding it wrong. So many excuses or reasons.

You can get a 'bumper'. Vodashops give them away and claim that it helps. They are interesting in that they offer some protection for your phone by lifting it off the surface. Downside is that your phone doesn't slide into your pocket as easily and, if on silent, you won't hear the vibration very easily.

Do a network reset , might solve your problem

That's what she said...

I'd be inclined to look at the network before blaming the device. Dropped calls on MTN/Vodacom/Cell C/Virgin are well documented.

I'd agree. In fact I've had fewer dropped calls since I upgraded from the 3G to the iPhone 4.

you on vodacom gf on mtn?

Thanks for the replys. My girlfriend and I are both on Vodacom. Same network, only difference is that she has the 16gig and I the 32gig. Been using a bumper from the start. I also believe that the dropped calls are due to Vodacoms crap network. But the loss of signal when lying untouched in many different places I can't explain.

I'd recommend Cell C. Obviously it's a schlep to switch and everything. But their network just works so well with the iPhone 4.

Exactly the same with my Iphone 4. It's like you describing my phone. It so bad my wife wants to trow it in the rubbish bin and buy me a "real" cellphone for my birthday. The previous 3gs was fine on reception. Going to try the network reset

I have had my Iphone 4 for around 5 months or so now, on MTN. Yet to have a single dropped call. My reception is perfect. I have a capped-case cover.

I dont pickup any wireless signal with my iphone. It was working one day the next day it was gone no change same os version. I have done a reset and still the same. My wife ipone works fine same model and os.

The dropped call issue is much ado about nothing. I have had an iPhone 4 since November on MTN, and I have NEVER dropped a call. One tip however......if you are not using the data, for apps or whatever - then switch 3G OFF. You get much better signals from EDGE or GPRS, simply because there are way, way more towers that support only GPRS and EDGE. The towers that are equipped with 3G are spread much more thinly.
If I am on 3G and get one or two bars, and switch 3G OFF in settings, my strength often jumps up to full bars. This is NOT a fault of the phone, it is a network problem.
By leaving 3G on, you are forcing your phone to try and use a 3G tower, which means it may ignore a nearby EDGE tower and connect to a distant 3G tower

This is great, bars went up from 2-3 bars to a solid 5 bar. Will test it today
