iPhone out this week

Different strokes but the iPhone is different("think different"). I don't like the hype either but for me the iPhone is the first gadget I've owned that's a year old and still gives me thrills because of new things being released for it so often.

True true:p

Found this, rather interesting, dunno how true, but sounds plausible:

I'm not sure about overseas pricing, but for those inside the United States, you can get an iPhone with NO CONTRACT from AT&T for $599 (8GB) and $699 (16GB). There's no reason whatsoever to pay these ridiculously high prices. You can walk into the store, buy the phone without a contract, walk out, go home and unlock it yourself. I just saved you about $800.

I don't understand, so you got the 3G iPhone, officially from Vodacom? If so it should work at some point, when and if they get their act together.

If you didn't get it from Vodacom, there is no reason for them to help you to get it to work... (and it will only ever work with a sim unlock or a software unlock, that doesn't seem to be coming)

Hey e.cachucho

No this is not officially from Vodacom, but as I was visiting my mom in the UK last week and told her about my Blackberry which didn't survive the fast spin cycle in the speedqueen, she surprised me with a pay & go iPhone from O2.
As for the support from Vodacom?? Well I'm first and foremost a Vodacom client, have been since '95 (I know loyalty smoyalty) but the reasoning my mom had was since vodacom was supporting the iPhone in SA anyway there should be no reason for them to not support any iPhone even just visiting SA. Must say the UK mentality is quite different than the SA thoughts on support/service, I also have my doubts.
From the registration process I've seen up to now I'm with Vodacom3g on the fact that it probably is only apple not recognising my sim card yet, I will test again tonight since it seems they will be launched in SA today!

It really doesn't matter if the iPhone is out here. That would mean that just because the iPhone is out in the UK, you could take your US AT&T phone, slap in an 02 sim card and it would work. It would not. The fact is that iPhones are Locked to service providers in most countries (the UK being one of them). The only way your phone will work if you plug it into itunes is if you bought it legaly unlocked from :Belgium, France, Italy, Greece or Portugal. Otherwise its never going to register on itunes, better start looking for a sim-unlocking option....

GET a Good Phone and a Good Digital Camera - It's cheaper then having all your eggs in the same basket...

...and here's why the Sammy is lookin good... http://www.gsmarena.com/showpic.php3?sImg=reviewsimg/samsung-i8510-innov8/camera/gsmarena_002.jpg

...and thats from a phone :)

too each their own, but this one's going to kick the N96 on the backside.

Hopefully the prices will come down soon tho, else Father Xmas won't bring me one.

I can't even find one easily in Europe, so don't know if its out in SA yet

anyway, photo-wise it's cool for a phone. some samples here... http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i8510_innov8-review-269p4.php (even a comparison with photo's from the i-phone 3g - nuff said!)

Samsung phones are the best for photos - I agree. That is because where other manufactures put a camera in their phone Samsung takes a camera and puts a phone in it :)

Lucky b45t4rd! How's the 3G signal reception and general speed (of browsing)?
Great when I tested it. Really an excellent device for consuming mobile content.

I gave the test unit to our resident gadget guru and experienced iPhone user Steven. He could not wait to put the phone through its paces – expect and in-depth podcast and review about the new iPhone soon.

Thanks for the feedback. Looking forward to hearing what he has to say about it. I returned my Nokia E71 because of its poor 3G signal reception (BRILLIANT phone otherwise), so I'm in the market for a new phone...
